TwtPoll: Where Should Tweet Links Go?

July 9, 2009 By Gail Gardner 18 Comments

I suspect that many get annoyed when links take them to Digg, Reddit, Sphinn, or elsewhere instead of directly to the content they expect. I created this poll to find out. If you have a strong opinion feel free to share it in the comments. If Twitter users know how their followers feel about this they are more likely to change how they Tweet.

NOTE: If you have already voted you can click on Vote and see results without selecting an option to see the current totals.

While you’re here why not check out some of the other posts? If you have a business or blog or would like to make money online you’re bound to find something interesting.

I prefer that the link directs me to the site itself.
I believe in what Yuva said, it’s like beating around the bush if you’d direct the person to Digg or Reddit. If you’re gonna post something interesting, then why not just link it directly to the site?

      Hi Uprinting,

Social Networking – both the Social Media sites and those that use them – are still trying to find their way. The reason people link to voting sites is because they want more votes. Most of the time if you link directly they won’t have that opportunity – or they won’t know about the submission.

One solution is to use the icons some sites have asking for votes. The reason people use these voting sites is that they can send a huge amount of traffic which can lead to more readers, subscibers, and potential income.

I think everyling should give what is proposing. The same case if someone would told me: “Common, I will show You my car”, and then he shows me his dead butterfly collection.

      Welcome Zegarki,

Yes, that is why some object loudly when the link they think goes direct takes a detour. Your analogy of the dead butterfly collection is correct – and funny.

I think a link to a Digg and such is fine as long as when you publish it you clearly state where it goes and why.

      Hi Alex,

I was thinking of links in Twitter so length constraints might make that tricky. It is always a good idea when placing links in posts.

I don’t mind landing on digg / slashdot or boingboing pages from twitter. Apart from the story, I also enjoy numerous comments on the story 😉 Though I wouldn’t mind landing directly on relevant content.

You haven’t wasted a day reading slashdot comments? Digg comments are comparatively lame but I have had some eye opening discussions on slashdot.

      Hi Jim,

Good to know you don’t mind. I read a lot of comments in blogs and sometimes on sites like SlashDot but spend almost no time at Digg. I used to love StumbleUpon and hope they might restore features that eBay eliminated while they owned them.

I have yet to create a process that could possibly get around to everything so I rely on intuition to know what to do when.

      Hi Martin,

You are likely to be in the minority but judging by the limited number of votes so far apparently it is not nearly as big an issue as some might believe.

Well, i would prefer to go via digg, because first thing i will get benefited is of getting traffic and social contacts from other weblinks, thou it is a waste of time, but anything for my web rank.

But one thing should be kept in mind, while moving from one place to another, you have to leave your footprints, then only ppl will inspire to follow you

      Hi Paul,

I suspect you mean when you share your own links and not when you’re clicking on someone else’s. There is always going to be a difference of opinion based on whether people are Internet users only or site owners.

I see you provide a link building service that appears to focus on directories. I hope you don’t every sell incoming links from spamming dofollow blogs. I am seriously considering putting up a post with links to businesses that are buying those services hoping they’ll find it and realize what a very bad idea that is. I suspect most businesses paying for comment spam don’t know that is what they are buying.

      Hi Yuva,

I suspect many prefer going directly to content while those seeking votes will prefer that links go to voting sites.

I don’t really mind if the link takes me to Digg since I get to see other people’s reaction on the article on the comments section on Digg. It could be a waste of time but it does not bother me. LOL

      Hi Terry,

That is a good way to view the subject. I asked because I frequently see complaints about routing visitors through voting sites. I suspect it depends more on whether someone uses these sites or has an interest in getting traffic to one they own.
