Small Business Link Opportunities

October 12, 2013 By Andy Nathan 30 Comments

With all the changes happening to Google search these days, it is hard to understand what small business link opportunities exist. That is exactly why we need to discuss in-depth which link opportunities are good, and which are bad.

Good Small Business Link Opportunities

Quality Guest Blogging

Guest BlogThe days of $5 articles are over. Google no longer values links to your site in articles that are not informative for readers, and worse so grammatically incorrect and written in broken English that no one understands.

While Google has put the hammer down on guest blogging over the past year, they have not hit all bloggers equally. Google understands that not all guest posts are bad. Instead, they are hitting the spammy guest bloggers with the unnatural anchor text in the author profile at the bottom.

Instead of relying upon anchor texts and crummy posts, spend more time on quality articles where the linking naturally fits in with the content. That way you will not lose ground with Google, and will have a quality article that you can share across your social networks proudly.

Social Media Links

This leads us to another form of Social Media appslinking: social media links. While this is not very highly rated in the algorithm right now, social media does factor into your search rankings. The fact that social links are there is a testament to how far Google has come over the past two years in respect to their attitude towards social media.

Infographics

Infographics ExhibitionMOZ.com recently discussed how the spammy infographics are no longer going to work for SEO link builders, because Google does not like the fact that the same infographic with the same anchor text is being used on 100โ€™s of sites across the internet.

Instead, use WordPress Plugins like the one that John See created to help you vary the anchor text, so whenever you launch an infographic the anchor text changes with each image embed. This provides hundreds, and potentially thousands of anchor texts to be shown across the web providing you with a larger expanse of link coverage.

Putting Your Small Business Link Strategy Together

As you can see, there are a few different ways to create stellar backlinks for your site. The key is to find what works best for your audience and then use those findings to put together the best small business link opportunities for your business.

Great article, I am currently working on my SEO for http://www.starbusshuttle.com.au we are an Airport shuttle bus company based in Melbourne Australia. We would love any feedback anyone would be able to give on getting quality Do Follow links from travel websites. Also we would love any advice on how to approach large travel websites to offer reciprocal links.

      Hi Steve,

The reason many businesses start a blog is to publish amazing visuals and content that attracts links. In your case, what you want to do is attract travel writers by providing images, videos, and local information they can use on their sites.

Create content full of images and/or videos and make sure you mention that sites are welcome to use your images and videos as long as they provide attribution. Start by choosing a popular location near you and creating a really awesome page all about that location, what tourists can do there, and include unique photographs.

Then reach out to travel websites to let them know about your research and telling them they can use it in their own content as long as they link back to the original. (This is what I mean by “attribution”. We don’t use the work of someone else without giving them credit.)

If you don’t relish the thought of doing it yourself, contact a local school and see if you can get their photography or videography students interested in your project. Tell them you’ll feature their work on your blog. If you can afford it, hire talent to do it for you.

Businesses should not expect writers to link to a site unless there is awesome content worth linking. Create that first, and then make sure the writers you want to know about you are sent the links to the very best information you have shared. Focus on just one awesome page at a time.

The last time I spoke with someone wise enough to know, yes, commenting in some sites can help you rank; however, it can also get your site manually and/or algorithmically penalized.

It’s gotten to the point where I am scared to put any type of backlink on my site for fear that Google will devalue my site. Regardless, I still backlink through social media as well as sporadic social bookmarking and article marketing, and it works well for me. If you overdo it too fast, the big G will penalize you. I have learned that lesson the hard way.

I agree that we should start leveraging on the social media links despite the fact that they don’t really figure highly in search engine algorithms. Socia media is getting bigger each day and their popularity is also increasing; they are definitely here to stay. Those reasons alone could one day change the way the search engines treat social media links.

Actually I’m still learning about quality links. But, until now I’m still use the old ways through social media and guest posting, and it’s still working. I think we just have to make the links as natural as possible so that google won’t give us penalties ….

    Andy,

I have used many of the links you mention – social media links, infographics, even some guest blogs. I get offered guest posts often but I don’t often accept those on my blogs. I may reconsider that. I don’t always make it into a coordinated linking strategy.

    Warmly,

Thanks for the information. I am on the uphill side of the SEO and google learning curve. I try to absorb every bit of information that I can.
I am not really aware of how guest blogging works, but am enjoying making new friends and learning from them on social networks.

The whole thing is a nightmare – knowing what to do and what not to do. One day you read A is good then suddenly A is no good anymore and you need to do B. In fact if you have been doing A for the last year or more your site is slapped!
I guess its good Google are keeping people on their toes but this stuff really is frustrating.
Thank you, for your useful update of it all.
