Small Business Content Marketing Gold

July 23, 2011 By Gail Gardner 23 Comments

While many people are out having a good time, I know that serious small business owners may be online tonight searching for ways to increase their sales. This post is for them.

You need to be EASY to find online. Think content.

This video is a good place to start:

Russell Sparkman Presents Content Is Marketing Gold from Fusionspark Media, Inc. on Vimeo.

The other videos in the Russell Sparkman Content Video Channel and this Content Marketing Retreat Keynote Address by Joe Pulizzi and the Junta42 Content Marketing Blog are worth watching.

When you’re ready to publish content you may want to work with experienced bloggers in your niche. I am actively researching the very best writers, top blogs, and most influential social media marketers.

If you want that type of information for your business, just ask me. If you’re new here and don’t know me, you can find out what others have to say about my influential blog collaborations.

If you don’t want to figure it out yourself – or need advice on what to do next (or first) – ask GrowMap for a free content marketing consultation.

As said before by me; I support you on content marketing – it’s a great way to make customers and building the brand.

Very informative and useful share of this video. It motivates me to do new things such as branding and linkbuilding.

The second video is giving me thoughts about how to advertise for my small business – in a better way. For both me and my clients. ATM I use methods thats not working for long-term run..Maybe I should change my strategy!

Indeed. Having a small business can be pretty hard. This is a good point. First thing a small business owner should do is to find some good bloggers, writers, marketers. This will certainly help. Thanks for the tip.

I see your content includes video. What would you see as an appropriate mix of text content versus video? I want to put a video content strategy together with transcripts but don’t want to do video for the sake of it. There needs to be balance. Ideas?

      Hi Andrew,

As someone who not very long ago could not watch videos online because the only high speed option available was really bad HughesNet, I believe not having at least some text on the page is a big mistake.

Besides all those people there are folks who can’t play videos at the time because they’re at work or someone is sleeping or their speakers aren’t working or any number of other reasons. If a post is ONLY a video or a short excerpt they’ll just leave and probably not be back because they’ll get busy and forget – even if they were VERY interested.

The ideal would be to have a full transcript or at least the highlights for every video. Here I use video as bonus content rather than in place of posts and I can’t recall ever sharing a video without supporting text. That is also important for SEO reasons.

Serious vloggers could have every post a video but I would still recommend the above to them. Other bloggers don’t really need a video in every post although a short video might be interesting. I do sometimes recommend long videos in hopes my readers will open their minds to what they have trouble believing.

Also if you want to welcome Chinese readers/buyers as well then you shouldn’t use too many videos or at least not embedded from youtube, because that is blocked in China, just like facebook, twitter, imdb, etc., etc..

          OT:
I’ve read quite a lot of posts on this site and I really love how you always reach out a helping hand to the smaller businesses, especially in these times. I respect that.

    Hi,
I was checking out Russel’s video, the first one on the top, and found it both funny and useful. I recently read on one post someone stating that small business owners sometimes make more money than the big players…and started to wonder about the logics in that sentence…if a small business can keep a run with the big one, than it doesn’t make it small anymore, does it?
Anyway, not to bother you, until the time comes to run with the big league, I will finish up checking the other video, as well.
