Will Social Media Disappear or Go Real Time Social? Find out in this week's Future of Publishing!

March 5, 2012 By Steve 32 Comments

In this episode of Future of Publishing, Echo’s Chris Saad and Influence People’s Murray Newlands talk about how publishers can transition from publishing static pages to connecting with customers in real-time in a social media dominated Internet.

Highlights:

  • Users have grown accustomed to social media so they’re less willing to engage in traditional spaces than they were before.
  • User-generated voices and traditional editorial voices will continue to merge, smudging the separation between traditional media and social media.
  • Publishers can reconnect with users by drawing users into their spaces from social media.

Find out more about why Real Time Social Media engagement is key by watching this episode of Future of Publishing.

As per my views social media can be real social, if they focus more on security. Because on many social media sites there are lacks of security people is miss using information. So if it can be resolved then it could be real social.

Good point. Facebook’s security measures have been slipping as people often find themselves getting caught out by spam disguised as videos or pictures and then it spreads around to the rest of their friends too.

Facebook makes a boatload of money off of the tricks their advertisers pull on their users. Don’t expect that to get any better!

As great as social media can be to connect with customers, its not always applicable to certain types of businesses. Its important to understand who your customers are, and based on that devise a strategy on how to best connect with them.

Social media may run its course and die, some day. I do not foresee that day coming. However, I can build a strong social media business now…which will prepare me for that day.

One thing is certain. Those who started the social media trend will be amongst the leaders in the next great trend.

Real Time is where it is headed because afterall the ultimate goal for social networks has always been to mimic the real flesh offline world of socializing.

How much time do you need to spend to draw one reader from social media to your site? Because those interested in social media like Twitter users and Facebook users are not always interested in content.

Social media would not vanish soon but it would transform to some other form. Who know what it would be. Change is the most static thing. If social media network vanishes it would be some other way to share information more reliable and more efficient.

I think the use of social media is drawing people to your own place, be it a blog or a website. How social media are effective at it it’s pretty unclear, especially in terms of ROI. Like how many time do you need to spend to draw one reader from social media to your site? Because those interested in social media are not always interested in content. Think like Twitter users and Facebook users. Clearly it’s true also the contrary. But do they mix or are like water and oil?

social media is very important to people of today but this observation is also very precise:

“Users have grown accustomed to social media so they’re less willing to engage in traditional spaces than they were before.”

    sad…

Every internet marketer would tell you that social media is hear to stay cause people love to gossip that’s why it is so powerful. Just give it time and it will go real time cause in this day and age, if your company don’t evolve then you’re going to be left in the dust.

Very good points from Chris. As a person who spends a lot of time online and frequent a lot of sites, I find myself spending more time in a site with a live comment feature than static ones.

Since he talked about ESPN, I think a good site to look at when it comes to having that real-time discussion on-site is CBS Sports with their in game chat feature.

Off-topic but ESPN is biased so even if they have these new features to be rolled out for users like me, I won’t even take a look. 😀

I wonder who’s actually responding to live comments. I’m betting most big websites have teams of people to respond to comments.

I do think that Social Media will stick around for awhile. The simple fact is that most people still have relatively slow internet connections. Real-time streaming of rich media like Videos and Audio works great if you are in one of the metro zones, but outside of these well connected areas, text and comments is still the primary means of online media.

Very interesting. It seems that as the years pass, everything will become increasingly interactive. Visitors will participate more and more in a website and certainly this will lead traffic. I think the social networking will not disappear. Maybe just change somewhat.

Well to me it looks like social media is already real time news. Not that long ago when Whitney Houston died, I heard about her death on Facebook before it was on the radio and before it was on some major news websites. It’s crazy how quickly viral news goes around on social media.
