I loved this article, but if you have a minute to answer a question, I’d really appreciate it.

I am trying to enhance the social media presence for my brother in law, who is a lawyer. I have yet to figure out a good formula to d0 so.

Have any of you managed a twitter account for an attorney? Do you have any tips?

      December 15, 2011 at 12:54 pm

      Hi Pete,

For any local business, the first key is to build a following of people in the geographic area you are targeting. The largest mistake being made by small businesses is not targeting their local audience.

Next, you need to be tweeting interesting content if you want anyone to care about you or your account. I would use a mix of what’s happening locally, human interest stories, and maybe even some attorney humor (sparingly – don’t go overboard).

If the attorney was managing the account they could answer commonly asked questions and whoever manages it could share blog posts about what people need to know about hiring and working with an attorney. That could be quite a bit of your content, but again don’t go overboard because no one wants to only read about that.

The key to understanding Twitter and any social network is that they are SOCIAL – like meeting people at a bbq or a party – not a one-way broadcast channel that only contains advertising.

What I am trying to get bloggers, social media agencies and SEOs to understand is that they need to choose a geographic area to target and focus on that. You can still have a national or international audience, but you need to become known for your expertise about that specific geographic location.

Instead of managing a separate account for every small business you could have one major account for Boulder that tweets interesting content about Boulder of all kinds, what’s happening locally, recommendations for local businesses and interact with others in Boulder.

Geo-target that account so that you create a large local audience. Interact with other Boulder-based people and if you choose to have a separate account for your Boulder business those accounts can converse.

I have posts that explain all of this. Start with the one I’ll put in CommentLuv in this reply about how to geo target Twitter accounts and then see my Twitter Best Practices for everything from How to use Twitter as a communication tool, to videos and links for newbies, to advanced strategies.

I find most people use twitter for the soul purpose spamming to get traffic to their site, maybe that’s why all their links are nofollow. Besides, I also think that facebook is 100 times better then twitter. Just my personal opinion.

      Hi Loc,

Then you’re following the wrong people. I intentionally focus on interacting with other DoFollow CommentLuv bloggers and we all use Twitter effectively. Facebook is not very effective, but due to the large volume of people there we do use it. Some like it better than I do.

What is it about Facebook that you find 100x better than Twitter? That you only interact with a limited number of people you choose?

      Hi Adie,

Honestly I have to force myself to sign into Facebook I dislike it that much; however, it can be used for good. It is just so slow and unusable – probably by design to keep people so busy they can’t accomplish much.

The platform isn’t so important as what you do with it and especially as who you interact with. It is the people that matter.

In the future please Use KeywordLuv instead of hanging links off the ends of comments. It is much easier and more effective. Many bloggers will delete any comment that adds a link the way you have done here. See additional insights in the post I’ve put in CommentLuv in this reply.

      Hi Roger,

Twitter is much faster, more efficient and allows you to connect with people you do not already know. In contrast, Facebook is slow, unusable and geared more to interacting with people you already know.

Twitter is also an easy way to remember and find people. If you choose a Twitter username that is short and memorable it is a fast path to whatever link you put in your bio there. Instead of remembering domain names or how to find someone on Facebook I just plug them into Twitter and find their bio and blog or business quickly and easily that way.

Businesses can also target a specific geographic area more easily on Twitter than on Facebook (unless you buy ads).

      Hi John,

Why not jump in and use your free credits and then decide? All new users get 100 credits to start, 25 more when they fill out their settings, and then those with more time than money can Retweet and follow others to get more free credits and those with more money than time can simply buy credits inexpensively – especially during this special promo.

JustRetweet is new but influential bloggers are using it. Many of us have 20,000 to 40,000+ followers so you can’t go wrong.

Influential bloggers who have 20,000-40,000 followers who are often OTHER influential bloggers are actively using JustRetweet. THEY are definitely not “empty followers” and using JustRetweet is a fast way to “meet” them – just RT what they share, follow them, and start a relationship with them.

@ Saad, even i was getting most of my traffic from FB, i always thought that Twitter is useless as there are numerous software’s that will do automatically tweet for you, follow users etc. One of my friend forced me to start using it and the Retweet has been doing wonders for me. Retweet has many advantages, a blog post With a retweet back link, the process is real time, which is a benefit for those tracking response time. Think of it as an electronic replacement for word of mouth, with the major difference being the ability to connect with people around the world.
