It is far easier today to start a blog by yourself than it was when I found a web designer to create this site.
Neil Patel has a very thorough post explaining how he generates his income. In it, there is a step-by-step guide to how to create a blog to promote your services to actually make money.
Most blogs won’t make the $381,772 Neil made in just one month. But he suggests that it is perfectly feasible for bloggers to make 1/100th or $3817 a month.
I personally know dozens of bloggers who earn a living entirely online and got their start by using a blog.
How Do Beginner Bloggers Make Money?
One of the most common ways to monetize a blog is to offer services. What skills do you have that others would be willing to hire you to perform?
When you start out with that specific goal in mind, you can create a blog more focused on converting visitors to buyers.
It guides you in what type of content to write and where to promote it to attract your potential clients.
Bloggers generating an income through offering services is the #1 most common method used by the bloggers I collaborate with regularly.
What Kind of Services Do Bloggers Offer?
Not surprisingly, writing services is most likely the #1 service bloggers offer. Here is a list of the most common services offered by bloggers:
- Social media management
- Search Engine Optimization (SEO)
- Email marketing
- Search Engine Marketing (Pay per click / PPC)
- Virtual Assistance (VA)
- Influencer marketing
- Web design
- Lead generation
- App development
- Conversion optimization
- Video, SlideShare, Infographic and/or custom image creation
This is not a comprehensive list. Anything that someone would rather pay a freelancer to do instead of doing it themselves is a possible service you can offer.
Note that SEO is a very broad field with many sub-specialties. Few are expert at all of them and it takes years to get to that point.
But you could focus on blog outreach or on-page optimization or any other aspect of SEO that you can learn quickly and then expand from there.
How Do I Promote My Services on a Blog?
Once you choose what kind of service(s) you wish to offer, the next step is to determine what your target clients would want to know.
Before You Start Writing, Learn SEO Basics
It is a better use of your time to learn just the basics of SEO and write correctly from the start than it is to have to go back and rewrite everything later.
Interlinking is extremely important as I have been told that until a piece of content has an incoming link it can’t rank. That link can be internal and those are totally under your control!
Write Content to Promote Your Service(s)
Research keyword phrases related to the type of service you want to offer. And then create a post or page to target each of those phrases.
For example, if you are a writer, your content should be related to hiring writers, choosing writers, contracts with writers, etc.
Anything that a person interested in potentially hiring a writer would want to know is what your content should cover.
The reason for this is to attract potential clients, show your ability to write, and answer all the questions they have.
Blog content attracts incoming links which can increase the amount of traffic Google and other search engines send you.
It also creates trust, establishes you as a subject matter expert, and introduces you and your services in a non-salesy way.
How to Write a Services Page
The most important part of your blog is your services page. Some bloggers put their services and call-to-action on their custom home page.
Others choose to have their home page feature their blog content and have a tab in their navigation that leads visitors to their service page.
Either way, your services page needs to be designed to convert your visitors into buyers. Read this how to write a services page guide for tips on how to do that.
And then strongly consider asking someone you know to proof-read it. If you can get expert advice on conversion optimization, that is even better.
Be sure to include testimonials and reviews of your services on this page.
Other Important Pages a Blog Must Have
There are pages that are legally required and also pages you really need to have. The most important page besides your services page is your about page.
Every blog, and especially one selling services, must have an about page. This is the only page where you should talk about yourself.
Use it to convey your expertise and engender trust in your visitors. Ideally, it should have one or more photos and may include press links to any coverage you or your site receives.
How Can I Increase Visitors to My Blog?
Driving traffic is a specialty unto itself. And it is tougher now than it was in years past. Once, just sharing a link on Twitter would send dozens to hundreds of visitors.
Sadly, that doesn’t happen much anymore. But there are ways to get traffic, both free and paid. Most new bloggers have a limited amount of money, so let’s talk about the free methods first.
How Can I Promote My Blog for Free?
As I mentioned, sharing your content on social media yourself is not as effective as it once was. However, there is a method that works well for me: Viral Content Bee.
The way it works is that you offer credits to their members to share your content. It works well because many of their members are influential online with much greater followings than you probably have.
You can earn credits by sharing other people’s content or buy credits or become a subscriber to receive a set number of credits each month.

Paid Methods to Promote Your Blog
Use Facebook promotions if you are willing to invest some money into getting more traffic to your blog. That is the method most likely to generate traffic.
But if you want to promote your services directly, run ads on Google or Bing and send the ads to either a custom landing page specifically for that purpose or your services page.
Be very conservative in your spending until you determine what will work for you. Test your ads on Facebook first.
Once you find images and wording that converts well, then you can consider running ads on LinkedIn as well.
