      Hi Raymond,

Thousands of the best blogs now use our plugin instead. A few of them use Akismet too but now they will be able to see the real comments more easily because most spam is botspam and G.A.S.P. blocks it.

Not to worry – just focus on CommentLuv-enabled blogs that use our plugin too. You do know there is a CommentLuv Search Engine?

I just installed the plugin today, and it’s working fine for most comments. However, I’ve discovered that commenters who use Google Chrome as their browser can’t leave comments. They get the message that they need to enable JavaScript, but they already have it enabled. Any suggestions?

Which version of the plugin did you install? I will contact Andy and have him check for that. I thought that issue was found and resolved in a very early version.

I’m using Version 1.1, which is the one I found through WordPress plugins. Since I posted my original comment, I have learned that people using Firefox and Safari can’t comment on my blog either. They are all getting the same error message that they need to enable JavaScript but they all have it enabled.

I’m using the Revolution theme, and I have several other comment plugins activated, also: CommentLuv, DoFollow, Edit Comments, KeywordLuv, Live Comment Preview, WP Ajax Edit Comments. Maybe there is a conflict with the theme or one of the other plugins. It appears that only people using Internet Explorer can comment.

I can happily attest to the fact that GrowMap AntiSpam Plugin (GASP) just works! I’m using latest version of WordPress (3.01) and I haven’t experienced any issues. Since I installed GASP (about 5 days ago), I have only had ONE (yep, 1) spam message. But it was not left by a spambot, it was a human! (Shame, shame!)

GASP’s record is much, much better than Askimet’s. But to be fair, Askimet did flag almost every spam message, while unfortunately catching a few non-spammers in its net, too. But like others have said, I’m all-too-glad not to have to dig my legitimate commenters out of the moderation queue. GASP doesn’t let them in in the first place, so there’s no time wasted.

Voted for it WPHonors and added a plug over at the WordPress Support Forum. Thanks to Andy Bailey for creating the plugin, and thanks to Gail for providing support. Gotta love the ComLuv community!

Gail, I’m very interested in this plugin, especially since I had a recent problem with Akismet.

I am concerned about having to check a box at the end of the comment. My instinctual reaction is to NOT check boxes on websites. And most of who comment a lot on blogs are used to seeing the box to check if we want all future comments on that post sent to us, which most of us don’t — so we’re conditioned to not check boxes down there.

Of course, GASP could eventually train people to overcome this.

Case in point: I automatically hit Submit without checking the box! Good thing you have the warning.

      Hi John,

We have Dazzlin Donna Fontenot to thank for the warning popup. Originally you would be taken to another page and half the time your comment would not be preserved when you click back. That was a huge leap forward thanks to her being a programmer.

Funny that you think not checking boxes is the instinct and others think checking them is. Regardless, that is how it works and it has made blogging a joy again for so many bloggers already that I believe most will just check the box when they see the reminder.

      Hi Keith,

Did you know that Akismet can delete comments you never see if you have one box checked in the configuration? I once thought as long as I rescued comments from the spam section and did not have that instant delete configured that using Akismet was a good idea. I no longer believe that.

When someone leaves a comment they should receive a message that says their comment is being moderated. That doesn’t happen if you have Akismet installed and they have been flagged.

Even worse is the white page that commentators get and their comment instantly deleted in posts older than 30 days if they have been flagged and the blog has that one box checked.

I will discuss the position of the check box in relation to the submit button with Andy. He may have had a reason for positioning it where it is. The good news, though, is that if you do forget it you just get a message and never leave the page or lose what you have typed in. (That was the improvement suggested by Donna.)

We think so. We did have one blogger complain that if you have java turned off you can’t comment, but who uses the Internet with that off? I don’t believe we can really trust Google Analytics data on that because you can’t tell which are real people and which are bots and other visitors.

Today I got 20-something spam comments from one of the blogs where I have this new plugin. When I checked, I found the plugin had been deactivated… and not by me. I’ve had this happen many times with SI Captcha, and I don’t understand why I’m not seeing other reports of this. It looks like someone has figured out how to deactivate plugins!

      Hi Lane,

I’ve seen the same thing in blogs. When we were using a couple of our newer blogs to test to see if specific bloggers were flagged as spammers I was positive that I had the Akismet “delete immediately” check box UNCHECKED only to find it checked again.

The first thing to ask ourselves is who else could have changed that (i.e. who else has Admin access in our blogs). After that, I believe that Automattic, WordPress, or anyone they give access may be able to make changes even if we have our blogs hosted elsewhere.

We would prefer that they not be able to do that but it is certainly within the realm of possibility. We must all be more vigilant at knowing what is configured in our blogs and raise awareness any time strange things happen.

The other strange thing about WordPress is that even in blogs where Akismet is turned off, where comments go that you try to approve is erratic. I have two lists to prove that: on one clicking not-spam sends comments to trash and on the other comments go to pending.

Maybe there is a back door that can be used by officials at WordPress? So far you are the only one I’ve seen report anything like that. I will keep my eyes and ears open and let you know if I hear of any others.

There is a new version because some blog themes had some kind of problem that was affecting the original versions. We need more people to click IT WORKS on the WordPress page even if they did it before. That apparently gets reset with each new version.

      Welcome Slava,

I am sure that Andy will be reading all the input about it and will consider your suggestion. One improvement Andy made to the plugin already is what happens if you forget to check the box. Try “forgetting” once to see what happens and you’ll see that won’t be a major concern.

I’ve installed it and it works a treat – as above my only concern is I wish the check box could be moved above the submit button – any news on this? cheers,

Thank you Andrew. I need to add a request that users please visit the page for the GrowMap Anti-SpamBot Plugin in the WordPress plugin repository and indicate that it works for them so that bloggers who do not know us will know whether to trust it or not.

Oh, right – the plugin’s been released (I just commented on another posting saying I look forward to it). Will give it a shot on one of my sites. Andy’s great, so I’m sure it’ll be good.

      Hi Stephen,

I will be updating all those other posts that is has been released. You’re just too quick for me. I only wrote this post and the Official GrowMap Anti-Spam Plugin page after I wished I was asleep this morning.

Sorry I was so anxious to upload the plugin that I made a typo on my email address in the first comment. I don’t want to show up as shadow man. Thanks!

      Hi Ileane,

I deleted the other comment but now I wish I had saved the other details you shared. Got too fast with the delete process. Oops.

Thank you for being one of the first to start using this great plugin Andy wrote for us. It has saved me sooooo much time already!

Hi Gail, no worries about the first comment. I was really anxious to record a screencast and write a blog post about the plugin and to thank you guys for creating it. It’s been a labor of “luv” and I congratulate you on a job well done. When you get a chance please visit the blog and add any additional information or links that we can take advantage of. This is really a big deal and I’m happy to be one of the first users of GASP. I also encourage everyone to rate the plugin so that as many WordPress users as possible will see how valuable it is.

Thank you so much for your support Ileane,

I will definitely raise visibility on your new post about the importance of this plugin for bloggers, their readers, businesses and especially commentators.

Yes, it really IS a big deal and I am thankful to all who have helped make this alternative to Akismet a reality.
