For many businesses, especially those in construction and manufacturing, rubbish removal and disposal is a significant part of their everyday activities.

5 Green Questions to Ask Your Rubbish Removal Company

While you do need to consider cost, efficiency, and timeliness, it’s important to examine the recycling credentials of the company providing the service.

It’s also important that you, as a business owner, place a strong emphasis on environmentally friendly practices. Your efforts will influence your staff, helping them to reduce the negative impact your business has on the environment.

Encourage your staff to reuse, reduce, and recycle by putting environmentally focused practices in place.

When looking for an environmentally conscious rubbish removal company, consider its stance on sustainability. You need to understand what will happen to your waste after the company collects it.

1. What Type of Waste Do You Remove?

Your goal should be to ensure that the company you choose disposes of your waste in the most environmentally conscious way. So it’s important to ask your waste disposal company what types of waste it will remove.

Doing so will give you a better understanding of what you can and can’t recycle. The company will also be able to guide you on how best to sort your waste in order to help with the rubbish removal company’s recycling efforts.

You will also ensure you’re not charged additional fees for incorrectly disposing of prohibited materials.

Most rubbish removal companies will remove:

  • Wood, metals, sand, and plastic
  • Office furniture
  • Excess building offcuts and materials
  • Paper and cardboard
  • Plants, grass, tree branches, and other organic materials

2. What Can I Do with My Hazardous Material?

It’s important that you make the company aware of any hazardous waste you need to remove. Not all waste disposal companies will have the ability to remove hazardous waste.

But they can often explain the correct way to remove it. Hazardous material can have an extremely negative effect on the environment, so correct disposal is vital.

Some of the most common hazardous waste materials you should discuss with your rubbish removal company include:

  • Asbestos waste
  • Lubricants
  • Hydrocarbons
  • Chemicals
  • Oils (engine, hydraulic, and oil soiled materials)
  • Contaminated materials and other materials requiring special disposal

3. Where Does Waste Go After the Rubbish Removal?

As populations are growing, landfills are becoming a huge problem across the world. Leading European countries have acted quickly to reduce their landfill amounts to close to 0%.

But in places such as America, a large majority of waste still goes into landfills. It’s now becoming more important than ever to find alternative ways to manage our waste.

You should seek to get a better understanding of where your waste will be going once it has been removed from your business premises.

Waste removal isn’t something you can ignore. You need to be active in finding a company that’s transparent about what happens to the waste your business creates. Then seek the most environmentally sustainable option.

4. How Much of My Waste Will Be Recycled?

Green practices are a key selling point for businesses, and most reputable waste removal companies should have a recycling target of 80-90%, if not higher.

You should be able to find companies’ recycling targets by checking their websites or by getting in contact with waste removal companies directly.

5. Can You Help Me Reach Sustainability Targets?

It’s important to find a waste disposal company with a strong emphasis on environmentally friendly solutions. Such a company will reflect positively on your business.

The type of company will enhance your efforts to set recycling goals and sustainability targets. The result will be it will help you to minimise waste and maximise resource recovery. This strategy is a terrific way to boost your business’s green credentials.

Having your business reach sustainability targets will provide some great benefits for your business, such as good public relations and cost savings.

Consumers are putting a greater emphasis on green practices. They prefer to deal with companies that show an interest in sustainability and environmentally friendly practices.

It’s important to remember that putting environmentally conscious practices in place can actually save your business money.

Doing so will help you to attract new customers. By reusing, reducing and recycling your waste, you will lower removal costs while doing your part to minimize your damage to the environment.

You must ask about the charging criteria as to whether they charge for junk removal service on hourly basis or job basis

Really great advice. We all need to do what we can to reduce the waste if you put back into the Earth. We usually think of recycling household waste but we often forget business waste. Much of which can be recycled. Thank you for sharing.

      Thanks Maria,

Many businesses usually slack off when it comes to reducing waste. Hopefully opinions will change as time goes on and businesses are more educated on waste and appropriate disposal.

Hi after reading your article I agree with most of your observations but still find most people here in NZ are more concerned about price than the environment and the skip guys that do the right things seem to be penalised because they are a bit more expensive than the Cowboys.

Hiring a rubbish removal company can remove a large amount of waste from your home or workplace. They will remove all of the junk very quickly and effectively at affordable rates. BUT, when choosing a company you have to be very picky. Do some research and read some of their customers feedback.
