Critical Marketing Skills You Need to Write Great Content

July 25, 2018 By Sana Syeda 25 Comments

Marketing is a part of almost every brand’s top priority. The ability to write great content is essential.

Critical Marketing Skills You Need to Write Great Content

Being in touch with numerous businesses and marketers over the past several years, I’ve learned that marketing has an immense potential to influence people’s lives.

But marketing skills and professional development don’t come easy where things are changing rapidly.

Today, businesses are demanding a strong and adaptable skill set from their employees. This has paved the way for T-Shaped Marketer.

Companies that can effectively develop its people with evolving marketing skills and creative insights get a huge edge in offering value to their customers.

No doubt, content is the king in today’s digital marketing era.

But producing content that overshadows your competition is not that easy.

Since an average reader spends only 8 seconds reading a piece of content, it becomes vital to write valuable and engaging content for your audience.

Getting hands-on a range of tools and skills not only offers flexibility to create diverse marketing plans, but it also supports each marketer to foster their skills.

So it goes without saying, these critical marketing skills are what you need to produce great content and stay abreast in the fierce competition.

Let’s dive in!

1. Explore Before Expressing

Carrying out proper research prior to stepping into the execution phase is imperative to gain successful results. Developing a marketing plan on a shaky base is a synonym for failure.

Explore and examine previous campaigns in the market and extracting lessons from those experiences. It also involves finding out bloggers or influencers to reach out.

In short, you need to develop a list of targets through research that will help you to write content amazing enough to be shared by your target market.

2. Rank Your Tasks

This is one of those marketing skills that is not highlighted enough, but it is vital for writing great content.

How?

Well, producing great content is all about selecting the best content writing opportunities or concepts while rejecting the others.

You need to prioritize your tasks at hand. For example, you can start labeling your tasks with respect to their prospects.

This ordering of projects, concepts, and plans is what enables you to be more focused and creative, ready to produce amazing content.

3. Bring Synergy

Let me recall the definition of synergy:

“the interaction of elements that when combined produce a total effect that is greater than the sum of the individual elements, contributions”.

This is vital for teams.

But why is it important when you are working by yourself?

Because the websites that you approach might wish to work collaboratively to generate a piece of content. So you must realize the value of synergy.

4. Rack Your Brain

Coming up with an idea is another marketing skill that you need to develop because this idea is going to make or mar your content.

No worries if you only come up with average content quality for some projects. But if you are determined to get massive success, you need to rack your brain for those original and unique ideas that help you stand apart!

5. Keep Your Eyes Open

Checking how your content is performing is important. It will enable you to identify readers’ engagement with your content and highlight areas for improvement.

If you are not actively tracking your content performance, you will never be able to create great content by rectifying those mistakes.

Remember, creating great content is a gradual process and it takes time, effort, and constant monitoring of what you are writing.

6. Stories Inspire

Storytelling is one of the critical (and one of my favorite) marketing skills that you need to excel with great content.

Being able to tell a tale is challenging, but once you get a hold of this skill, your content will stand out and will be doing the rest for you.

Remember Nike?

7. Some Designing and Coding

Thanks to websites like Canva, a novice is now capable of creating amazing and simple designs without the need to install and learn Photoshop.

Similarly, learning basic JavaScript will enable you to make little CSS or HTML coding tweaks to your website that can give you an edge over your competitors.

8. Don’t Be Afraid to Experiment

The Wright brothers would never be able to come up with the concept of the airplane if they hadn’t experimented with their idea!

Mark this one…

Behind every success, there are several failures.

If you are daring enough to face rejections and willing to experiment to continue to achieve your goals, your experiments will lead you towards success.

Ready to Write Great Content?

Creating great content is challenging. And I believe that this challenge can never be conquered without passion, knowledge, and perseverance.

These qualities cannot be acquired overnight. These are developed over a period of time through self-assessment, hard-work, failures, and learning.

People might criticize your content. Don’t take these to heart; keep pushing yourself up and ahead. Keep learning, brainstorming, and developing the skills needed to accelerate your potential.

      Hi Maria,

Thanks for sharing your views and feedback, it’s something I really value. You are right, graphic design is a good way, sometimes more effective than text-only, to persuade its target audience to care about the design in front of the brand.

However, communication is highly effective when your business goals meet visual aesthetics accordingly.

I hope you have a great career!

      HI Lyrics

Backlinks are one of the supreme ranking factor. However, sometimes alone it doesn’t offer results as expected. For example, to gain the most out of your backlinks, make sure that:

      – You have a technically optimized site

      – You have a strong site architecture

      – You have valuable content, updated regularly.

I hope these points will give you some idea.

If you wish to discuss further, you are welcome!

Can anyone tell the length of minimum and maximum content for high rank. And what is the exact percentage of keywords should use in the content

There is no one correct answer for length of content to rank. The Yoast SEO plugin only complains if your content is less than 300 words. This blog has a 700 word minimum, and 1000+ is better.

Neil Patel cites research that indicates that longer content attracts more links and ranks better. He recommends 2250-2500 words.

Most blogs will have some pillar content which Yoast is now calling “Cornerstone content” that is that long while the average post will be shorter.

    Sana,

I totally agree with the skills you listed here, particularly 3. Synergy. As much as I hate the term ‘synergy’, its a key component to successful marketing. This is a common problem I find when we work with multiple agencies on an account, causing marketing as a whole to suffer.

    Thank you for your content!
