“BloggerLuv is a lounge for active bloggers to connect and trade ideas and where to get what resource.”
BloggerLuv was started by John Sullivan who recently wrote a post about Dealing with Better Spam Comments. I wrote a long comment for that post and want to share it again here. It explains why I believe we need to think carefully about our definition of spam:
I’m sure many reading this probably already know that I am one of the champions for supporting small businesses and welcoming them into our blogs. Since John opened the door I want to explain briefly why I feel the way I do.
Spam originally only referred to automated comments left by bots – not comments written by humans. That said, I consider any comment whether written by a human or not that is NOT about the post it is left in to be spam.
Akismet is a major problem because many people we know who never spam have been flagged as spammers and many bloggers have a box checked that instantly deletes whatever they write in OUR blogs – and everyone else’s. There are posts about that in my blog in the Akismet category.
The only comments and links I recommend we not approve are those that are inappropriate or link to bad neighborhoods (adult content or gambling related). You can also choose to delete links to sales pages, Made for AdSense (MFA) sites or poor quality sites if you wish.
The questions to ask yourself is who does it hurt? Who does it help? Why do I care? I’m sure you’ll make the decision that is best for you.

The CommentLuv plugin definitely helps you to get more blog comments, but does it actually increase the traffic?
Yes, I have tested in the past by going out and commenting on other CommentLuv blogs and my traffic doubled. I need to consistently do it, and now that CommentLuv is being relaunched, I will in the future.

Thanks for the update ,Gail. I’m looking for a reliable plugin for my upcoming sites, so far commentluv has the greatest benefits to both user and reader. Allows us to engage with fellow bloggers and share links and also allows for users to comment and find some other topics thru posted links that might interest them. Thanks again!

Hi Nancy,
The problem is that the developer who created CommentLuv had health issues and chose to abandon the plugin. So far, no one has created anything to replace it, and so far it keeps working so we haven’t had to delete it.
But I don’t believe you can register for it anymore. And WordPress is about to make huge changes in 2018, probably April or after. That may affect what plugins we can run.

Hi
Great share!
With the heavily debated “Google Sandbox Effect,” you can probably forget about your blog generating very much search engine traffic for the first two to four months. If you’re not dedicated as well as persistent, you might like most bloggers, throw in the towel before the first six months is up.
Aside from overcoming the litany of challenges involved with generating traffic for your blog, the other problem involves growing your blog community. Ever visit a blog that has zero or one comment on every post? Can you hear an echo in here?

When you understand the impact that CL has in regards to SEO, this tool can not be overlooked. I am not saying that it would right or wrong; I will say that the time that it takes to leave a decent comment and actually read a blog post will greatly reduce bounce rate. Why is that important? The search engines penalize you for high bounce rates by lower rankings.
Hi Matt,
That is an interesting point I haven’t seen made before – and you are correct that lower bounce rates are a factor. There may be a trade-off though because CL attracts spammers and they don’t always read or leave decent comments so they spend less time than real readers.
Either way I support CommentLuv because it is beneficial to small businesses and they are the solution to the impending economic crash. More on that in my post CommentLuv Your Way to Business Prosperity.

[Hi Matthew, Your comments are being stuck in spam by WordPress (Automattic) so you are probably on the worst Akismet blacklist. Commentluv is great for getting some comments, but you still have to look out for spam, I mean human spam. Automatic spam is already dealt with with GASP. I think it should be common courtesy to read the blog first and comment with something useful. add value.
Then in return you get a backlink, that is a good deal.

Your comments are very good which is great. I get so tired trying to decide which weak comments to approve and which to delete as supporting small businesses is a high priority with me.

Hey Gail,
My bad, I got confused with Bloggerluv and Commentluv.
Wouldn’t you help small businesses if you delete their weak comment, so they learn they should do their work/commenting well or not do it at all.
Although sometimes it looks like you are a charity for small business, you are still running a high quality blog and are in a rolemodel position. So instead of giving away free links to people who probably just skimmed the text (if they looked at it at all) just because you support small business, I think it would be more valuable if you slap their fingers for having a bad habit (weak comments for links). Or else you will reward their bad behavior.

I think bloggerluv needs John there as much as anything, that site would be a good investment for someone as long as they do things right, change too much as the place could lose it’s appeal.

Nice article Gail. I am really hoping we can keep BloggerLuv alive and within our grasp with a financial backer. I have benefitted so much from John and yourself. Hi Karen,
BloggerLuv is growing very quickly so with any luck a way will be found to keep it alive because many bloggers are active there already. Thank you again for deleting all that spam.
I blacklisted a ton of obvious spammers using the WordPress field in conversations and it looks like doing that puts those into SPAM. As long as I can confirm that is the ONLY thing putting them into SPAM that is an improvement. Since yesterday I have 662 in spam and only 108 in pending.
It looks like Andy from CommentLuv and Phil from FeedBlitz are working on a plugin for us.

Hi, I am also a blogger but I don’t usually earn from it. It is just I want to be “in” to the trend of Internet. Meanwhile, I am posting informative articles related to businesses and crafts. I also agree that many people could earn through blogging but it all depends on the quality of their blog.
Hi,
One reason I recommend bloggers collaborate is because it is the fastest way to improve the quality of their blogs. Have you considered registering your blog on CommentLuv so you can benefit from the additional links and encourage readers where you comment to visit your site?
You can even create CommentLuv default links so that each comment creates two links to different landing pages targeting your preferred anchor text.
I highly recommend that every blogger have a Twitter account and display it on their blog where it can be found easily (ideally on a text search for the word Twitter) and used in blogs like this one. You can get a lot more traffic by using Twitter. It is THE most commonly used Social Network.
.-= growmap´s featured blog ..Support Small Businesses =-.
I’m a member of BloggerLuv and I did find good people within the community, and most of my traffic on my personal blog – at the moment – is coming from there, even I’m not that active. It’s kind of sad that John is leaving it for good.
I’m also using commentluv, to reward my readers, well I’m thankful that there are still some who are reading my stuff there LOL. But anyway, I’m very interested with SBC Gail, how can I join by the way?
Regards,
Jason
Hi Jason,
I just sent you an email containing the link to join SBC. When you get in look up OPM Adam Riemer and Power Affiliate Ron Cripps and do start reading me on Murray Newlands Affiliate Marketing Blog, Word of Mouth Marketing and Inbound Marketing too. Those are all good places for you to leave comments to get more visitors to your blog.

I pretty much agree with you regarding the spam. The only ones I delete are those that are off topic, or in some cases that looks as if it leads to a malicious site.
I’d be interested in joining the community. I already promote many people work on the various social media sites I’m a member of. I enjoy sharing the great content I’ve encountered with others.
I can relate to what Jarett is talking about, with some sites it can be easier depending on what you’re writing about. However, that won’t stop me writing about what I live; health, fitness, nutrition, my main focus is the natural approach. I’ve been using CommentLuv for a while, installed it when it first came out a few years ago.

SBC looks like something worth looking into and when I find a spare moment to breath from everything else I’m behind on I’ll certainly do that! Anything you’re involved with is bound to be good!
I really haven’t figured out what all the excitement is over BloggerLuv to be honest. I appear to be missing something. I guess I have such a strong dislike for the way forums/groups handle on buddypress that the site layout was a real put-off to me. There’s a great group of people there but many of the same faces I see on quite a few other communities too. For now I make avid use of CommentLuv, ShoutMeLoud’s Tweet Club, Tribe Syndication teams, and social media. After a while it all gets so much to handle that the idea of adding another thing to have to check is overwhelming and just not something I rush to do!
So what’s your secret? How do you keep up with it all??
Kimberly
.-= Kimberly Castleberry@Social Media for Beginners´s featured blog ..Dreams and Dreads – What Keeps You Going The Distance =-.
Hi Kim,
LOL…How do I keep up with it all? I don’t as some might deduce by the fact that it is 5:32 a.m. and I haven’t been to bed yet. Something eventually has to give – everyone can NOT have their own forum, their own community, and expect us to be everywhere consistently.
Over time we will all end up gravitating to fewer places. I share your dislike of forums (which is how I ended up co-moderating SBC – to organize it so we can get in, find what we need, and get out – which is not what the original intention for that forum was).
As for BloggerLuv, it seems to have a certain appeal as a place for bloggers to unwind and socialize. It has some of the same issues as a forum (activities being too fractured into different places and too hard to find anything specific there), but the ability to see the members fairly easily has been useful. We’ll have to see what happens especially with John wanting to sell it.
I do hope you’ll join SBC because there are huge benefits and no specific time required. Once you look around in it you’ll know what I mean.

.-= growmap´s featured blog ..Best of GrowMap – Our Most Important Posts All in One Place =-.
Hi Gail,
Though I’m a big fan of Bloggerluv and Commentluv, I think its usefulness depends on the blog niche. For one of my sites, it’s targeted towards health and fitness bloggers, so installing Commentluv has worked out quite well. Many of the people that comment on the site are actual bloggers.
I have some reservations about adding Commentluv to my dietary supplement blog. Admittedly, the blog itself does not generate very many comments especially in proportion to its traffic. At the same time, virtually none of the comments are from other bloggers. Heck, most people that comment don’t even have a Gravatar much less a blog of their own.
For that particular site, I’m reluctant to add Commentluv because of the audience and niche. Commentluv is obviously ideal for blogs that blog about blogging, but how well do you find it works for other niches?
.-= Jarret@dietary supplement´s featured blog ..Eat more fiber to combat the metabolic syndrome =-.
Hi Jarret,
What you have revealed is something I already knew – there has to be a leader in each niche who identifies quality sites in that niche and explains the benefits of CommentLuv and collaborating to them.
We all know what quality content is so any time we come across a great blogger we need to share what we know and invite them to collaborate with us. We didn’t know about CommentLuv until we either came across it or someone told us and they don’t either – yet.
Rarely do you see a blog that doesn’t have CommentLuv that has a lot of comments. CommentLuv makes it much faster and easier to build a community and that is obvious any time you look at a blog that has it installed.
We have to pro-actively create a CommentLuv community for each niche. We can also search for bloggers in our niche that already use CommentLuv by using the CommentLuv search engine.

Wow..I really liked your comment about ‘spam’ … I myself have been identified as a spammer in many sites though I did wrote long thoughtful comments.. .-= Jakes´s featured blog ..bloggerLuv – A great community for bloggers =-.
Well my experience about spam is that if you write a lot of comment soon or later you will find yourself in askimet blacklist.
And it seems it’s impossible to be removed from that blacklist.
.-= alex@Giochi Divertenti´s featured blog ..Polar Boar =-.
Hi Alex,
You’re absolutely correct – that IS what happens and why we have disabled Akismet in all of our blogs. We have even temporarily put up Akismet Text pages so we can tell when we have been flagged.
What we really need is a whitelist / blacklist plugin we can control ourselves OR a joint effort blacklist that only those who agree on what spam is can influence.
.-= growmap´s featured blog ..WordPress WhiteList BlackList Plugin Wanted =-.
Welcome Jakes,
Thanks to the spammers, many bloggers think any comment that links to or mentions any business, product or service is spam. Many of the highest quality commentators have been flagged by Akismet as spammers.
The problem with Akismet is it is too easy to get flagged as a spammer by a Newbie and too hard to get unflagged. They could fix that if they chose to but so far they don’t seem to care enough to change.
Join us in our groups and you’ll know whose blogs you are welcome in.

Hi Gail! I whole-heartedly agree with your recommendations. My moribund blog has enjoyed a new lease on life, thanks to the boundless love shown by the members of all three communities.
I haven’t been in SBC for long, but your help, in particular, has shown me that it can be a viable place to network, learn, grow and participate. Of course, all the good folks at BloggerLuv made such a happy fuss over my blog that I HAD to get CommentLuv installed to return the favor, LOL!
Kim’s video was awesome, too. I like her ninja methods!
Cheers,
Mitch

Welcome Mitch,
If you are excited now wait until you really get going. It is not that challenging to become one of “the” most celebrated blogs in ANY niche when you collaborate and you know the right way to support each other. That is what we share in SBC.
The first thing to do is to make sure you know who you’re trying to reach and how they would search for you. See the post I’ll feature in CommentLuv here for details.
Do not hesitate to ask questions because the answers to every question you ask benefits all those too shy to do it themselves. Did you know that I am willing to add members to chat or Skype so they can get instant answers any time I am online?
That can go a long way to really speeding up your success and eliminating the frustration. We also share what is really worth buying (only a few critical tools and Andrew Rondeau’s Income Blogging Guide Course which even Kikolani and I are taking) and what not to waste money on. Don’t buy ANYTHING before you check out that section or ask us.
For decades “gurus” have been teaching each other that selling how-to is the way to make a living. You can buy and buy and buy but if you can’t implement any of it your money and time are wasted.
NEW BLOGGERS: Don’t select a host or Theme before you check with us. We know from experience which are the best, least expensive, have the best support, etc. Join us FIRST and then get started – or join now to take your blog to the next level right away no matter where you are now.

Hi Gail, these are excellent recommendations that I also support. I’ve created video tutorials for BloggerLuv and CommentLuv and I plan to be more active in SBC in the coming weeks. In the meantime I continue to show support for the bloggers involved with these networks by retweeting and adding likes to Facebook, StumbleUpon, Amplify and various other link building outlets.
What I really enjoy about being a part of these groups is that I know I can safely browse blogs from within each network and find high-quality content that will benefit me and provide resources that I can refer my readers to. This also help build my reputation and credibility in the blogosphere.
Thanks for getting the word out.

Hi Ileane,
We really need to start collaborating more closely. If you use Skype or Yahoo, AOL, or MSN Messenger let me know and we’ll connect live.
Please do share links to your videos in this post and anywhere else they fit. I am link-happy and encourage people to think of my blog as they would their own. If you believe the links are useful for my readers share as many as you have.
I am having something of a challenge with spam at the moment. (I’m seeking a WordPress Plugin developer to fix that). If your comment doesn’t go live right away let me know and I’ll get it approved asap. The only reason these comments already appear is that I searched for BloggerLuv hoping most people commenting in this post would mention it. 🙂
You made an excellent point – that our collaborations are a fast way to find others who are generous and welcoming. Bloggers who don’t want us to comment in their blogs don’t usually participate on sites like BloggerLuv and we don’t invite them into SBC forum if we know they are like that.
