AKISMET TEST PAGES NO LONGER WORK!!! All our blogs use the GrowMap anti-spambot plugin now.

UPDATE: the new GASP Anti-Spam WordPress plugin has been released and is available in the WordPress Plugin Repository.

THIS is the ALTERNATIVE TO AKISMET that provides the SOLUTION to being Flagged as a Spammer! Spread it throughout the blogosphere and your comments will work again.

Are you a Spammer?
Are you a Spammer?

Before you go out visiting other blogs and commenting, it is a good idea to check to see if Akismet has you flagged as a spammer.

Copy your comment and paste it into Notepad or Tomboy Notes BEFORE YOU CLICK SUBMIT!

If your tests show that your comments are being sent directly to spam and you do not get a message that your comment is being moderated or a white page, contact the blogger using their contact form or Twitter or any other means you have and ask them to rescue your comment.

If you see a white page your comment as been deleted. You will not be able to comment in that blog until the blogger changes their Akismet configuration OR you get unflagged as a spammer. We recommend you send them a link to our post about Configuring Akismet.

Since Akismet removed the test page, we are temporarily providing test posts in two of our newer (unlaunched) blogs. Simply go to either of the Akismet Test Pages below enter your comments.

AKISMET TEST PAGES NO LONGER WORK!!! All our blogs use the GrowMap anti-spambot plugin now.

  • Akismet Test Page using Akismet 2.2.7
  • Akismet Test Page using Akismet 2.2.9
  • NOTE: I am seeing references to Akismet 2.3.0 being released; however, that version is not showing as the latest version tonight on the official site. We have not seen it and do not have it installed anywhere.

If you do not immediately see your comments either the specific wording you used in your comment or your name, URL or IP address has been flagged by Akismet as spam and NONE of your comments will appear immediately in ANY WordPress blog using Akismet (which is most of them).

The option to only allow comments to be visible after one comment has been approved is NOT enabled in either of those blogs so all comments left should immediately appear unless your comment is captured by Akismet.

If your comment does not immediately appear or you ever see a blank white page or no message indicating that your comment is being moderated, contact Akismet to request you be removed as a spammer. For best results, be sure to include all of the information you use when commenting.

I also recommend you include your current IP address which you can easily get by going to What is my IP.  Many Internet Service Providers assign a different IP address each time you go online so even if they unflag the IP address you provide you may still have future problems.

If you are now or have ever been flagged as a spammer by Akismet please comment in our post Akismet Thinks We Are Spammers. Bloggers need to see that this is not an uncommon occurence and it DOES affect many of their regular readers and commentators.

It’s always hard to find that you blocked by Akismet or not. But as you and your reader say how we know that we flag as a spammer. I am also facing the same problem while I am started commenting on blogs. After that no any notification or no any moderation message. But initially, I think do not taking care of it. But after I saw that there is no single comment is appeared from my list of comment. Hope everyone should be aware of it. By the way, nice article and discussion keep updating and keep sharing.

      Hi Leslie,

I find that anyone who comments regularly ends up flagged as a spammer. This is because bloggers don’t know what spam is. I’ve even had some that say they will flag a comment as spam if they don’t already know the person who commented or if they don’t like the comment or agree with it.

I do my best to get people to install GASP (the free GrowMap anti-spambot plugin) so that even if WordPress still puts their best comments in the spam section, at least you can find them because GASP has blocked all the comments left by bots. I used to get 1000+ PER DAY until GASP was created.

      Hi Pritesh,

As it has been five years since I wrote about it and over six years since we first starting complaining about it I would not expect it to ever be “fixed”. Because of the way Akismet works, the best commenters will always be flagged as spammers. As for deleting comments, that is how Akismet is intended to function as explained in Akismet Deletes Comments Bloggers Never See.

Down with Akismet! With the way they work I could mark people with valid comments on my blog as spammers. They could be people looking for relative blogs to network and if I was of the mindset could make it hard for them. This really is not a fair system. It is like the negative SEO that some people think you can do to your competition with backlinks and ranking on Google.
    Great post, thanks!

Akismet is not a plugin that I like. One, because it does screen out valid comments but also because someone can report you as spamming and that is it, no recourse. I have used a banned by Akismet tool and they ban your domain from being in the website field. That does seem a bit over the top to me. The blog that I was blog commenting with was a skin care site. Not cool by any means. Thanks for this post. We need to spread the word.

Your comment did not go into spam so you are NOT on the worst Akismet blacklist WordPress (Automattic) keeps, but you could still be on the first level that would be put in spam (or even deleted instantly – see why Akismet deletes comments) in all WP blogs running Akismet. (We do not.)

Use the test link at the top of this Akismet Blacklist post and the link to contact Akismet further down in the post if you find out you ARE blacklisted to request removal. Note that they sometimes answer fairly quickly and others times do not and they will remove some from the blacklist and tell others no.

    Hi,

You have to really read posts to understand what is going on. There is a gold attention box at the very top of this post that says we no longer have a tester that works because we long ago deleted Akismet in every blog we manage.

I have never seen Akismet automatically un-spam someone who have been flagged, but theoretically IF enough bloggers mark your comments not-spam you can get un-blacklisted. The challenge used to be that it only took a few spam clicks to get you blacklisted but even dozens would not get you un-blacklisted.

Since I refuse to use Akismet and rarely comment in blogs that haven’t replaced it with our I don’t know for sure if that is still true or not.

      Hi Mark,

Best of luck. You could be in for a long wait. In the meantime, focus on CommentLuv Premium blogs that almost all use GASP. Most of them delete Akismet but those that use it are more likely to see your comments and rescue them because if blocks the spambots that fill up the Akismet spam folder.

“Most blog owners regard comments similar to yours as spam. You can expect your comments won’t often be published.

That’s not the case everywhere. Akismet is not a blacklist. Each blog owner teaches Akismet which kinds of comments they wish to publish and which they do not. That’s their decision and under their control.”

What should i do now? problem is still same.

Sorry Prem but there is nothing much that can be done! I have reported my issues about twice and nothing has ever been done. Most bloggers remain blacklisted. It is hard because bloggers have no clear cut rules on what is or isn’t spam to them! I have made valuable comments and even wanted to become a regular on some blogs but they found my comments were spam or Akismet felt they were spam! I gave up! good luck

Well that isn’t exactly accurate, because no matter how many times I clicked “not spam” it still kept putting comments from my regular readers into spam.

They make it sound like only those we agree are spammers are blocked but that just isn’t how it worked when I deleted it from all my blogs and I doubt that is how it works today.

For me, the biggest issue was the time it took for anyone to reply to my emails. When they did, they were quick to reply and remove me from the central db (after a little check to make sure I wasn’t a bad boy). The problem is that it took nearly 3 months to get to this point.

Personally, one of the biggest problems is caused by the constant spamming of blogs. It’s not surprising that blog owners get tired of trawling their SPAM folder looking for valid comments and, instead, simply empty the entire directory!

Hope you get your issues fixed soon, Prem

          Hi James,

Spammers caused the problem and bloggers like me have to find ways to shut them out. The best solution to Akismet is to stop using it and raise awareness about Akismet alternatives.

We also have to continually explain to other bloggers what really IS spam and what is NOT spam. See the post I’ll put in CommentLuv in this reply for details.

It probably takes more than one but not too many more. It is much easier to get banned than it is to get unbanned. You can contact Akismet and ask to be unbanned. Sometimes they answer; sometimes they don’t.

As far as I know there is no way to find out who would have marked you as spam.

I appreciate all blog owners do not want hundreds of one line comments saying “nice blog” just so a webmaster can get a link back to their site. But if askiment or site owners are so set against it why not just take away the option of including a url! Surely that would stop spam in its tracks and only encourage those that are genuinly participating in the topic to post.

Or am I missing something 🙂

Yes i agree that the URL field should be removed. I mean, come on, you spend all that time reading the blog’s content and writing a value-added comment, only to find that, upon clicking the submit button, your entry is gobbled up and you are left facing a blank screen. My guess is that it’s designed this way to frustrate commentators. I’ll have to admit that if this was the objective, it sure worked good. But this method, bordering on sadism, is abit surprising. The approach could have been planned better.

      Hi Ron,

While Akismet does sometimes answer and unban commentators, the odds are that you will end up banned again. Any or all: IP, URL or email can be banned.

Your best bet is to comment in blogs that use our alternative to Akismet instead. Blogs that have the check box asking you to confirm you aren’t a spammer (or their own text – that is easily changed) usually don’t use Akismet and if they do they’re likely to rescue your comments if they like them.

One thing to remember is that many bloggers will mark your comments as spam because of the kind of sites you’re linking.

The good news is that they ban your email address so you can still blog comment but will have to change the email address that you use. All it takes is a blog owner that thinks you are spamming and they can flag you. A little unfair but spamming is wrong.

Thank you for your thoughts. I’m not a spammer either but somehow I got blacklisted, even if my comments add to the discussion. Do they ban IPs too? If so, how can we remedy that? I’ve already installed a plugin for Chrome but that doesn’t seem to be working.

Akismet is failing for my blog. They are putting valid blog comments in my spam. I don’t know why this is the case but I have removed them from my site. I also realize that they have banned my email address. Is it possible because I use the word breast in my post?

      Hi Becky,

If you ask the average blogger to define spam, most would definitely put your blog in that category because you are promoting what most people would consider “snake oil” products (i.e. do you REALLY think any of those things will work?).

While exercise DOES work (within reason) pills, lotions and potions are more likely to simply part the desperate from their hard-earned money – not to mention that that particular desire is the result of bad conditioning and not loving yourself just as you are which is a much better idea.

I totally understand why women are obsessed with size – because they ARE being judged on that – but it is just wrong in so many ways.

On top of that, sites that promote these types of products are often viewed by Big G as “bad neighborhoods” so many bloggers will remove or delete your links because of that – and some percentage of those will do it by clicking spam. You are probably never going to be able to stay off Akismet’s spam list – if you can even get them to remove you.

I approve far more comments than most blogs do, but I had to think long and hard about allowing a link to your blog because I hate to see anyone encouraging breast enhancement. I discussed it with other bloggers and in the end I left your link because it is probably unwise to try to hold the masses to my standards.

        Hi growmap,
I completely understand. Although these products do work the people that promote them over hype them and engage in unethical practices to promote them. That is hard for me and other women that are honestly sharing what they have experienced.

I agree that the media and other things pressure women into conforming, which I would rather not see happen at all.

BTW, male enlargements do not work scientifically and I think breast products get clumped together with them.

I have started another niche that will allow me to share without the negative image.

        Thanks for understanding.

          Hi Becky,

I am wise enough in my old age to never say never because some things DO work for SOME people, especially if they have specific nutritional deficiencies – and almost anyone eating the standard American diet (S.A.D.) is seriously nutritionally deficient.

Exercise definitely enhances breast appearance, but it doesn’t increase size anywhere near as dramatically to what many women desire. It is unfortunate that physical attributes are considered so important. Women being small is as negative for them as men being bald.

A blog with a wider niche that includes other subjects less associated with over-hype would definitely be beneficial for you; however, you will still have issues with Akismet. Everyone who comments regularly on new blogs is bound to end up blocked by Akismet.

Encourage the bloggers you like to switch to our GrowMap anti-spambot plugin instead. It will save them a ton of time and ensure that real comments get through. See this link for our Akismet alternative.

Have just discovered the work you’ve been doing on Akismet and spam, so I thought I’d add a contribution. My problem with posting comments on wordpress blogs started this year (last year was ok) and seems to have been triggerred simply by the URL. I’ve been on wordpress forum about this and you might like to check out this link:
    http://wordpress.org/support/topic/my-comments-on-other-wordpress-sites-are-not-showing
It seems Akismet likes a starintforward www URL – http URLs and specific page links are treated as spam.

Disappearing comments, the white screen are not an option for me and what ever happened to freedom of speech? I also plan to post a blog on this very subject and ping you as the authority. This point:
“We simply can not allow our readers and commentators to be sent to a blank white page, have their comments immediately deleted before we even see them, or to not receive a message that their comment is being moderated. This plugin IS the solution to those ills.”
        is exactly my complaint.

Unfortunately it appears I cannot use this with WordPress.com

I will see if a WordPress.org website I own (but did not set up, this was professionally done) can host this plugin.
Although my comments are always defaulted to my WordPress.com account, even when I am working on the WordPress.org web site.

Hopefully this will be made as an available option for the plethora of WordPress.com users.

Again thanks for the information, at the very least it tells me why I am successfull here and why sites I have been active for years on (such as some RVing sites) often never make it past Akismet

Bad behaviour is another plugin which its worth having a look at if you are concerned about spam, its pretty effective and can be used in conjunction with other spam filters.

    Hi Sara,

Some bloggers only allow you to use your home page URL but most will allow deep linking (linking to a specific page) so I suspect that some of your “inside pages” have been flagged by Akismet.

Unfortunately there are no longer any test pages because we have removed Akismet from all our blogs in favor of the anti-spambot plugin mentioned in this post.

The key to not being seen as a spammer by bloggers who welcome people who want to build links AND comment is to always read the post and make a relevant comment SPECIFICALLY related to that post. Let CommentLuv and KeywordLuv talk for your site.

Even if you don’t have a blog or can’t install CommentLuv you can register to use it. Read How CommentLuv Works.

When a blog offers KeywordLuv like this one does using a name followed by @ your keywords makes your comments friendlier and helps get them approved. Instead of flat irons for hair use Sara @ flat irons for hair. Read How to Use KeywordLuv.

Finally, an easy way to get more anchor text links is with CommentLuv default links.

Start looking for blogs that have the check box you see here with various text asking you to check the box to confirm you are not a spammer. 99% of those blogs will not have Akismet installed. Those are using our new GrowMap anti-spambot plugin aka G.A.S.P.

      Hello,

Yes, that will do it. Look for blogs using our new plugin and you won’t have that problem. You can request Akismet to unflag you each time you end up flagged.

There are a couple of things that will help you get your comments through. If a site uses KeywordLuv use both a name and your keywords like this: Adam @ spring assisted knives because many bloggers think having a name in there is friendlier. If you don’t want to use your own name choose a pen name.

Also check out the new CommentLuv anchor text links. You do not have to have a CommentLuv enabled blog to register to use CommentLuv.

I think Akismet does a very fine job in blocking spam but Akismet’s biggest problem is that, if any blogger thinks you of a spammer (even if you didn’t intend to spam or if he marks you as spam just because you left a very rude comment), then Akismet will start blocking you on all the blogs which it powers. To me, that’s unfair as a person. You are not giving that person a second chance until unless that guy begs your support form to unblock you.

They should just block the person on the blog…where they were marked as spam rather than blocking their comments on the whole wordpress platform.

    Hello,

There are two ways you can improve the comments that you’re trying to get approved:

    1) In KeywordLuv blogs use a name and your keywords instead of just keywords. Many people consider that “friendlier”. If you don’t want to use your own name pick any name you like as your pen name. Instead of Discount Gucci enter your name like this:

    Suzie @ Discount Gucci

Read more about that in my post about Keywordluv and in the post I’ll put in CommentLuv in this reply.

    2) Don’t leave short generic comments like “wow, great blog” or “great post”. Be sure your comments are specifically about the post so the blogger can tell you read it. Make them at least as long as this one.

You are bound to be flagged as a spammer by Akismet because you often leave very short, generic comments. Those almost always get deleted and many will flag them as spam.

Use my tips and bloggers like me will approve your comments. There will always be bloggers who think any comment from someone they don’t know that links to a business is spam but we can’t do anything about that unless we convince them to stop using Akismet.

Most bloggers did not know and I don’t think Akismet really wanted them to know. They aren’t too happy with me. A good way to get more quality comments is to use the CommentLuv search engine to find blogs related to yours and go out commenting in them.

First register your site with CommentLuv.

I do have commentluv installed and I have credits in my account, but it would seem that my choices aren’t seen here. I will have to check to see what may have went wrong. Thanks again.

My website is 2 years old, I have nearly forgotten of its existence. Today I wanted to promote my site a little bit with blog commenting and I discovered that I’m blocked by Akismet. I’ve leaved maybe 5-10 comments on some blogs in 2 years and now I’m blocked, go figure!!

      Hi Sean,

That is not unusual. Anyone who comments at all can end up blocked – especially if they sell anything on their site. Use the link in this post to request Akismet unflag you.

You might want to add photos to your site because some people (like me) don’t know what pocket bikes are. If you don’t know how join our collaborations explained in the post about BloggerLuv CommentLuv and SBC and we’ll give you a hand.

Very cool blog post. Very helpful and easy to understand. Thanks for providing the links to check askimet too. Nice and simple way to know for sure.

I tried out your test page but it is already full of spam. Akismet really should have some sort of request to get unbanned.

      Hi Jeff,

We deleted it – that is a side-effect of allowing commentators to test the way we are. You can request Akismet to unban you using the link that is in this post.

I have test my comment on your Akismet test website that you have given and found that my comment has been accepted so I’m sure my website is not listed in Akismet spam base. But still then some times I get an error like blank page or no message after a comment on some blogs. I don’t know why, but I think it’s some temporary technical failure of Akismet.

      Hello Pratish,

I am finding that the behavior of Akismet is not consistent and neither is the behavior of WordPress when it comes to commenting. Determine what is going on is complicated by other plugins, widgets and code present on each site.

Pratish, I’ve been experiencing some of the same problems as you. I put my comment through the Akismet test website and it worked fine (i.e. it came up as “Awaiting moderation”), yet often when I comment on a commentluv enabled blog I am faced with a blank page. Very frustrating.

First, i ever commenting for this article but my comment wasn’t shown. I think my problem is same with this article title, askimet treat my comment as spam. I can said that is askimet bug. So i suggest you to always re-check spam box, because sometime normal comment is jumped into it.

I wouldn’t call myself a spammer, I just try to promote my site, but I only read and comment on blogs i’m interested in, so really, linking my site is just something I do while looking for blogs, because I enjoy reading them and leaving my views.

      Hi Frank,

The problem is there is no consensus on what spam is and some believe they can guess correctly which people are readers who happen to leave comments and not link builders who happen to read blogs. 🙂

    Hi Gail,

Thankfully, both of my comments got accepted (in both Akismet versions). My problem only occurs when I am under a so called ‘bad’ IP Address.

    Kindest,

      Hi Nabeel,

I am glad this isn’t affecting you yet. Remember that specific IP addresses in the range you often use can be blacklisted OR words in the comment itself can trigger that comment to be put into spam.

Even if there is no Askimet, sometime my comment jumped into spam. Is it because my keyword is too long? I just know that from this blog admin, he said there is no askimet installed in this blog but my comment was go to spam.

          Hi Akira,

Some bloggers consider more than one or two keywords spammy. There is a setting for how many words you allow in KeywordLuv and using three or four will often send your comment to spam. I think I have mine set to five because there are lots of keyword phrases that contain three or four words that are quite reasonable in my opinion.
