How to Increase Small Business Profits: Related Products You Never Thought to Sell

One such source is CTS Wholesale and their site reminded me of times when I wish what they sell had been available when and where I needed it. Let me explain.

When I worked for IBM I drove 50,000+ miles a year. Driving in bright sunlight was hard on my eyes so I always wore very dark sunglasses.  Sometimes they were fairly easy to find – but other times I had to stop several places to buy another pair because mine were lost or broken.

It is a no-brainer for convenience stores and gas stations to carry sunglasses – but many do not – even though they sell products other than gasoline. That is one product they really should carry – and when you buy wholesale sunglasses they generate a handsome profit.

There is something even more needed and in demand and a logical product for far more types of businesses to sell. Now that baby boomers almost all need reading glasses they should be widely available – but they aren’t.

Why Restaurants, Cafes Should Sell Reading Glasses

Every time I meet someone for lunch or dinner someone borrows reading glasses. Sometimes no one thought to bring them because we don’t wear glasses except to read print. (Most of us don’t need them to use our computers.)

Any place that has menus could offer reading glasses for sale. They’re inexpensive, you don’t need a large selection of them, and they are one of the few impulse purchases even practical people often make.

Some restaurants are so dark it is hard to read their menus in the available light. Did you know there are lighted reading glasses? They’re not often seen, so they would be even more likely to generate sales.

I find them handy for reading in bed without having to have a lamp on (great when one wants to sleep and one wants to read.) They make reading particularly small print, curved print on bottles, and print on packages in stores much easier.

Other places that really need to sell reading glasses are any store that carries bottles or packages with fine print on them: drug stores, grocery stores – even second hand shops. People don’t buy when they can’t see what they’re buying!

What Else Could You Be Selling?

And reading glasses are not the only products that would sell quickly. Restaurants, cafes – even donut or coffee shops – could increase income by having a small selection of commonly used items such as:

  • Sunglasses and accessories
  • Reading glasses
  • Note pads
  • Pens
  • Lighters (note that most ecommerce sites ship EMPTY lighters so you need to buy and sell fluid)
  • T-shirts and caps

Auto related businesses where drives have to wait for their cars – such as car washes, oil and lube businesses, tire shops, and auto mechanics could sell the above items, plus car related accessories such as:

  • Phone chargers
  • AC to DC converters
  • Air fresheners
  • Armorall
  • Shop towels
  • Tire pressure indicators
  • Tire gauges

You have a captive audience who may have nothing to do. Why not offer them
items they need instead of having them pacing and irritable while waiting?

Yeah I think having related products to show to people that buy your product can definitely increase sales.
It can be something that complements the first product or maybe information on how to benefit from that product or service to the fullest.

The story about sun glasses was very interesting and I definitely think this concept can work in any marketing environment.

I personally feel small things which do not cost much get sold very easily. Moreover they can serve to get better profits for the business owing to the fact that they are bought in bulk which come for economic prices and are sold on higher individual rates. I feel restaurants, multiplexes and other recreational zones must sell these items for good benefit.

I too have felt the need many a times the need of these things mentioned in the post. It is true that small things like reading glasses and lighters are used in our day to day life and when we go out, we forget to carry these most of the time. Restaurant can make a good profit by selling these.

Before adding any product to my site I carry out traffic and competition analysis, I try to aim for the products with a steady demand but low competition and they sell well. Sometimes the product can be something as obscure as a chromed plastic trim that goes around the overflow on a bathroom basin.

Thinking outside the box is pretty important when it comes to picking the right product, and you have nailed that fact with this article.

I think that internet marketing, SEO, SMM all of it will have the backbone in this. Though it will be needed that you work hard and you have enough money to buy a personal computer and use a DSL. Good Job though.

I think this concept of selling relevant products besides your actual business is a good idea. Like, you will be able to target the same audience for two or more different products at the same time. Profits are going to touch the sky and we can reap good benefits from it.

Hi Mike,

There are many items you could offer at an RV storage business besides sunglasses. Gloves, the common sizes of fuses, lamps for tail lights, electrical tape, common wiring sizes, common plug sizes, tire gauges, lug wrenches, etc.

You would know better than me what else comes in common sizes that are widely used in RV – such as light bulbs. Maybe catches for cabinets? These are the little inexpensive things that your customers need regularly.

You could also sell things you might run out of or forget at home like cleaning supplies, dish washing soap, sponges, laundry soap. Washclothes, hand and bath towels. Toothbrushes, tooth paste, shampoo, cream rinse, liquid body soap.

There are many more pricier items you could offer such as camping supplies: lanterns, sleeping bags, cook stoves, backpacking type stoves, etc. The items your customers might buy from you are endless. Snacks, sodas, sandwiches, etc. IF you have enough foot traffic to keep them fresh. If not, sell snacks and bottled drinks that keep well.

Impulse purchases work. Something you need now, but don’t feel like going back home to get will sell. Some will even buy rather than walk back out to their car to get their glasses because you can always use an extra pair.

Some restaurants are so cold they could probably sell lightweight, inexpensive sweaters or coats. I suspect they keep the temperature so low to encourage people to eat quickly and free up a table, but often they’re probably just hot from working over a stove and don’t realize their dining rooms are like the North Pole. I always wear a coat into a restaurant – just in case – because sitting their shivering is miserable to me.
