Viral Video Advertising: Wingsplay Launches, Partners With Top-Tier Social-Media Advertisers

March 26, 2012 · 37 comments

This is a guest post by Olivier Lasry founder of Wingsplay, the first viral video advertising network, which connects influential social media users with the best viral video advertisers.  Prior to founding Wingsplay, Olivier worked in financial services at Ernst & Young, with clients mainly operating in the new tech/media industries.

Wingsplay Viral Video Advertising

Everybody’s talking about “going viral”, and sometimes for good reasons.

Mass awareness can now be achieved almost
overnight through Facebook and Twitter.

But distributing content in social media must be done in a smart way, with a deep understanding of how social networks are structured.

At Wingsplay, we focus just on that.  We have launched with partners including NBC and Oxygen, and so far our first results have exceeded our expectations.

VIRAL VIDEO ADVERTISING

Here’s what we do, and how we do it:

Wingsplay distributes funny, interesting video ads
through influential social media users.

It’s all pretty simple: influencers discover new videos on Wingsplay before anyone else, share them on Facebook, Twitter or their blog, and make money each time the videos are being viewed.

Our unique proposition is that these influencers are mostly every-day Facebook and Twitter users.  They also have many connections in social media, and generate much engagement among these connections.

At the time we started Wingsplay, funny video ads were already becoming increasingly relevant to social media.  The Web made it almost impossible to reach people with boring ads.

People don’t care about advertisers who interrupt them.
But the opportunity is huge for remarkable video ads
which people actually want to watch and share.

We also noted that every-day social media users, rather than Internet celebrities, were most efficient to generate viral spread.  They generate much more engagement than any other type of social media users, because they know their connections personally and have 2-way conversations with them.  However, they would never share blatant ads the way Internet celebrities would, precisely because they have strong ties to their connections.

That’s where Wingsplay comes in, and that’s the cornerstone of our distribution model:

We rely on compelling videos to leverage the long-tail
of influencers in social media, who happen to be the
most efficient at seeding video content.

We have also implemented extensive targeting functionalities, which constitutes a win-win situation for both influencers and advertisers.  We are able to surface only the most relevant videos to influencers, while at the same time advertisers can seed their videos through the most relevant influencers.

Our main purpose at Wingsplay is simply this:

Enable our influencers to discover great videos before anyone else,
and to incent them to share the videos they like the most.

We are then able to deliver unprecedented results to
advertisers seeding compelling video content.

Wingsplay is now in private beta, but you follow them on Twitter @Wingsplay_ (note the underscore at the end).

Viral video marketing though effective is not for all. I think it also depends on the product or service you are offering.
