Top Marketing Blogs on GrowMap Reading List

Twitter Share Buttons

Image Credit: Bright Edge Aug 2011 Twitter Share Buttons Bring 7x the Traffic

Adding compelling, retweetable content to what you share on Twitter benefits all who follow you and every blog you share.

In  my post on How to Use Twitterfeed, I suggested bloggers in my niche could find the blogs I trust so much that I auto-tweet their new posts as they are published by noting which came from Twitterfeed.

Since I wrote that post last October, Twitter has removed the links that showed where tweeted content comes from and bloggers have been asking me what blogs I read and tweet. Rather than reply individually I have compiled the list below.

If your followers are interested in marketing and social media you may want to read and share some of these high quality blogs. If you want to auto-tweet any of them, use my tips on using Twitterfeed to add them to your favorite Twitter apps with that capability.

TIP: Add New from @Username or Via @Username
or something similar to your automated tweets so others can
see the source and they will know you’re tweeting their posts.

They can then Retweet your tweets for
greater visibility and more traffic.

NOTE: A few of these blogs are not specifically marketing blogs, but the blogger supports social media and marketing bloggers. Others of these publish infrequently but of very high quality when they do.

The first four blogs are included because they are exceptional even though they do meet my other criterion.  It is highly unusual that a blog be included and over time I may delete these because I strongly feel all people are born EQUAL and dislike elitist attitudes.

CRITERIA for BEING INCLUDED IN MY LISTS:

(INCLUDING THIS ONE)

Here are my criterion for deciding to support your blog.

If your blog meets points two through four below,
leave a comment to be considered for inclusion.

  1. Exceptional content, but you don’t have to be absolutely polished yet to be included. If a blogger embraces 2-5 below I will include them and make suggestions to improve their content so that it gets better and better.
  2. A life view that sees other people as peers and not subordinates. (i.e., does the blogger treat others with respect, encourage and respond to comments, follow people that follow them even when those followers don’t have major influence yet themselves, etc.).
  3. Uses CommentLuv.
  4. Chooses to be a DoFollow blog – for those who don’t know, see this link for what DoFollow is.
  5. Offers KeywordLuv if they use the free version of CommentLuv or turns on Keywords if they use CommentLuv Premium.

I have collected over twenty-eight Reviews of CommentLuv Premium by many influential bloggers – most of whom meet the above criterion I use for which bloggers I go out of my way to support.

I now have roughly SEVENTY blogs in my TwitterFeed. I mention this because I’m sure some bloggers are concerned that feeding too many blogs could be an issue or cause unfollows.

I have had zero complaints so far and the quality content I feed often ends up featured in the various Twitter papers and gets RTed – sometimes even going viral for the blogger as @AdamToporek’s Google + and the Illusion of Privacy post did. (See the Going Viral section of my GrowMap 3rd birthday post for details.)

I encourage other bloggers to support their favorite blogs by feeding their content. We are all far too busy to manually do this and at least until it seems overwhelming (which it hasn’t so far) automating this just makes sense to me.

I do wish Twitterfeed would improve their system though because it appears to be sending all the tweets almost immediately instead of pulling the feeds as we configure it to do. It might be a good idea to consider using dlvr.it instead as some influential bloggers are.

TIP: Point at the blog link for a short bio
or my personal recommendation.

I will keep adding these until they’re all done as time allows.

NOTE: I am currently in the process of updating the original table by moving blogs that qualify into each featured section below. The placeholders in the table are temporary – there so that I may add new DoFollow CommentLuv blogs I find in my research.

If you know of any I’ve missed please leave details
including links in the comments of this post.

You may notice that many major blogs in our niche are not in my list. I do not auto-tweet content from any blog that publishes more than once a day which is why some blogs with excellent content such as Marketing Pilgrim are not included.

BLOGGERS: If you first thumb up and
then review this post on StumbleUpon
it would be likely to get more stumbles
and introduce more readers to your blogs.

Sharing it on Twitter, Facebook, Google+ and elsewhere
would also benefit all who are listed.

In a post with so much information, it is easy to accidentally leave someone out or introduce errors so do please let me know if you are one of the blogs I regular read or regular contributors so I can make sure this data is as complete as possible.

If you appear in my PeerIndex List of CommentLuv DoFollow Collaborators or my Klout List of Social Media Influencers you should be in this table. If you are not let me know and I will correct that.

If your blog is in Mark Thompson’s Stay on Search list of Top Marketers for which I created a PeerIndex List of Top Marketers and a Klout List of Top Marketers, contact me if you would like me to consider including you.

If you feel your blog or any site you know of should be included I won’t know unless you tell me, so please do. I may eventually find you but who knows when that might be? Today is always better than later.

Hi Jane,

Yes, they are all exceptional bloggers who are social media savvy. Even the ones with only a few thousand followers on Twitter are highly influential with their core group of readers.

These are the best blogs I read and the people I seek out for advice, collaboration and to connect with others.

GrowMap is a business friendly blog so I added anchor text for the site you linked. See How to Use KeywordLuv for details.

Hi Gail, That’s a quality list for sure. I subscribe to most of them. That’s a great way to use auto-tweeting, by promoting other blogs. That’s very admirable and says a lot about the list of blogs you promote. You obviously trust the content of each on to auto-tweet their content.

Hi Brian,

Each of these bloggers has very high standards for content so even their unsolicited guest posts are worth reading. I did drop one excellent blog because their content was not what another blogger I read today called “dinner table friendly” and what I call suitable for mixed audiences.

The problem today is that things I consider inappropriate and would never have been seen anywhere except in a baudy peep show are not plastered on billboards and part of prime time television. I believe we have an obligation to point out what is unacceptable for what was once called “polite company” and inappropriate for business sites.

If you auto-feed blogs that can happen, but one objectionable tweet can be deleted and that blog too without any serious damage. I consider that an acceptable risk.

Hello Rakesh,

I recommend using the default WordPress comment system, turning on threaded comments, and installing CommentLuv and the Akismet alternative GrowMap anti-spambot plugin (G.A.S.P.). That is what I do here.

You should find that most of the spam you are getting is bot generated and GASP will block all that junk and just as importantly NOT put your very best comments into spam.

We were getting over 1000 comments a day when we first installed GASP and it dropped to 40 so 960 were spambots. See that link for more information.

I think a combination of CommentLuv plus a spam filter like Akismet or Mollom should solve your problem.

I just added CommentLuv in order to attract some comments on my recently launched site (NewCustomerWorkshop) but have used Akismet with a good deal of success on other sites.

Hi Joe,

I must respectfully disagree. Akismet is a major failure because it lets through all kinds of spambot generated objectionable content and throws many of our best commentator’s comments into the spam folder. See my post on Crowdsourcing and/or the many posts I’ve written about Akismet for more reasons why we should not use Akismet.

When your blog gets popular you’ll end up with the problem I had of 1000+ spam a day. That is why Andy at CommentLuv wrote our GrowMap anti-spambot plugin which I have no doubt you have already seen here and on thousands of other blogs.

It blocks spambots and apparently they are responsible for the worst of the spam because I went from 1000+ comments a day to moderate to about forty. It was taking almost two hours a day just to find the real comments in among all that spam.

Worse, most bloggers don’t look so active commentators are effectively censored by Akismet.

This post was timed well. I’m actually looking at some spam fighting solutions for my day job. Our website does billions of page views per month and has millions of user generated comments published each day.

You could imagine that fighting spam is a lot of what we do.

I just read a little about GASP. A client side checkbox is a really neat idea. Do you ever see SPAM coming in from spambots that can process Javascript?

Hi Joe,

It doesn’t appear that any spambots have managed to crack GASP yet; however, I can’t be 100% certain because we do get manually left spam comments and there isn’t – as far as I know – any way to know for absolute certain that they couldn’t be generated by bots.

Thanks Gail. The comment moderation issue is important and tricky.

I actually have it on my list to check out GASP (h/t Ana Hoffman) but am also thinking of trying out Disqus. Though, every time I mention Disqus I get passionate opinions. I happen to like Disqus, but others seem to think it’s the dark lord’s pet program let loose on the Internet.

I already get 55 spam comments for each real comment, so while I am very interested in engaging my readers, I don’t want to encourage even more of the spam riffraff.

Thanks again for adding me to the chart and you’ll see me on Google+.

Hi A.J.,

Many bloggers dislike Disqus and IntenseDebate so much they won’t leave comments. The rest of us tolerate it and when they let me log in I will comment if I have something I really want to say.

There are so many blogs now that entirely separate blog communities have formed. Because there is only so much time, as I mentioned I made the decision long ago to focus on blogs that support small business and understand why dofollow and CommentLuv build strong communities. You may notice that almost all of my commentators use CommentLuv.

Before you decide definitely check out the brand new CommentLuv Premium we are beta testing that integrates seven plugins plus Twitter, Facebook and Google+. This new review of CommentLuv Premium by @MavisNong has many more details.
