Many will be enticed by discounted prices in big box stores – but before you go out holiday shopping and scoop up that “great deal” there is one thing you should do: check the reviews.
Reviews can save you time and money
- sometimes a lot of both!
Did you know that many name brand products have really bad reviews? And what ends up in big box stores? Last year’s models and models that don’t sell well. Bad reviews can cause that so you’re more likely to find bad products in a discount store.
Before I buy anything I go to the sites that tend to have a lot of reviews like Amazon and major review sites and check the ratings. Then I read the best reviews and finally I read many more negative reviews to find out what the issue is with that product.

81 one star reviews out of 166 = almost 50% negative reviews
JUDGING REVIEWS
Some people are just negative about whatever they review. Others never give 5 stars to anything. You can easily tell that by looking at additional reviews written by that person. People who have written more than one review for businesses located in the same general area are likely to be the most reliable.
I encourage you to learn to judge the value of individual reviews.
If you read many reviews that sound like they were written by the same person, that is a red flag. (Some businesses have not learned that they should NOT be paying for reviews. When they get outed they will live to regret that.)
PRODUCT REVIEW SITES
Amazon is a good site to read reviews on, but there are so many complaints against Amazon that I will not buy from them and I encourage others to buy directly from the businesses and not from sites like Amazon that act as middle men.
Yahoo! Stores has a very good review system with large quantities of reviews of both products and the ecommerce site itself. The volume of product and store reviews they publish makes it easier to evaluate both.
BUSINESS REVIEWS
Products are not the only reviews you should read. Businesses also have reviews in Local Directories including Google Plus Local (formerly Google Places), Yahoo! Local, Yelp and Merchant Circle.
There have been complaints about Merchant Circle and especially Yelp removing positive reviews and offering to remove negative reviews if the business with buy advertising. Yelp has been sued to no avail.
INDEPENDENT REVIEW SITES
Angie’s List is the best known independent review site, but you have to pay to use it. There have also been many Angie’s List complaints. What we really need is a review site that does not charge us for posting reviews that is impartial and not only in it for the money.
There is a new review site planning to launch in the near future called WikiReviews. Unlike Amazon that only does products or local directories that only cover businesses, WikiReviews will be one site where you can review anything and you can share anything you want reviewed.
Their interface is going to be extremely simple and easy to use – unlike Wikipedia and other sites that are so difficult to update.
“WikiReviews.com goes beyond what other review websites offer by letting users review everything from local businesses and products to public figures and movies. If the site doesn’t have the category the individual is looking for, they can request that it be added.
There is no other site out there offering the magnitude of reviews WikiReviews.com will cover.”
You can read the WikiReviews PRWeb Press Release for more details. What I most want to point out is that the founders want to ensure that the reviews are trustworthy.
- Members can flag reviews they feel are fake and vote them off the site
- Anyone can ask questions about listings and reviews to get additional information
- There can be multiple ratings. For example, a restaurant will have ratings for service, food, and ambiance.
- Reviews are portable. If a hairdresser changes salons, or a write
WikiReviews is a major undertaking and are asking for support from the businesses, artists, musicians, and buyers who will use it. They have an IndieGoGo campaign running we can support by donating, sharing, commenting and /or writing about them.
Every little bit helps so if you like their concept, but money is tight,
donating even $11 will make a difference.
If everyone who read this post donated $11 and shared the link to their fundraiser there is a possibility they could get A LOT more visibility and raise the money they need to make launching soon easier.
Here’s the link to their Crowd Fundraiser >> SUPPORT WikiReviews at IndieGoGo
Great for Small Businesses and Creative Types. Check out their videos!

I agree that it’s difficult to tell what reviews are honest and which are not, even on well known sites like Amazon. For example, I recently purchased a $500+ mattress off Amazon that had hundreds of 5 star reviews and was rather disappointed with it. Probably wouldn’t have purchased it if it hadn’t been for all the 5 star reviews. Live and learn I guess.

Hi Jason,
Unfortunately, there are people who pay for positive reviews and there are many review sites that will remove bad reviews for a fee. Hopefully a new review site will be coming out this year that is more ethical in that regard.
The thing to do is look for reviewers who have a mix of both positive and negative reviews. Read to see if their reviews are ethical or not. People are either ethical or they aren’t; they either lie for money or they won’t. Give their reviews heavier weight and discount those that appear fishy.
There are two additional problems with product reviews:
1) Quality control issues. I often see products with an almost equal split between 5 stars and 1 star. Clearly half their products are lemons. The most likely causes would be bad quality control or sourcing from more than one plant where one is lousy and the other excellent.
2) Some products people either love or hate. A good example of that is a Tempurpedic bed. Some people absolutely love them, but others say they’re too hot and they fell like they’re suffocating. That may be more personal preference than quality issues.
Read the negative reviews first. They will point out things you haven’t thought of and give you a better idea why you might want to avoid or even decide to buy a product.

else your readers might think that you are in the business just for making money. Also, affiliate marketing and ad sense ads can take the readers away from your blog even before they get to know your blog fully.
I agree on this article. I know most people think that bigger price means better value. It’s barely true these days. Writing an honest review online will actually serve us good.

Thanks for the post. I use reviews almost same way than you do with products.
I first get the big picture of everything and go through tens of positive reviews. Then I go through almost all negative ones and try to see if some problems occur many times.
The worst thing with this is that it takes a lot of time but you wanna be sure when you decide.

Such a good point about being weary about those who post mostly negative reviews and those who tend to leave 5 stars for everything. I personally like to read through the ones that re listed on the page (on Amazon) that are deemed to be the most helpful, and then also scroll through most of the other reviews to compare.
I read some where that amazon is hit by the google due to some problems and bad reviews. We just need to focus on the product reviews before we get or buy some items.
As review always provide you the best result.

It’s sad to think people really pay for reviews. I do read them on some sites before I purchase but can’t live by them either. If a product has a good return policy I’m happy with that. I’ve done a few here and there on products I love.

If the review is real ,then of course, I can read it and take into account. But what should we do with fake ones I wonder…

I live by reviews…though as some have said you do have to be careful. By now I can pretty much tell if a review is real or fake, no matter the product or service offered…there are little telltale signs. Thanks for the info! It’s always good to know that there are steps being taken to weed out the good from the bad on anything

Sometimes I do read reviews that seem written by the same person, but on different blogs. I think they’re more link building campaigns, rather than a way to create an image or attract new clients.

Thanks, You’ve put together an excellent list here, and I especially like how you’ve categorized different type of review site for easy scanning.
well,
This is true that you have to check the reviews of each product before buying it. You have rightly said that it can save your money if you check reviews before buying it !
Thank you

Even I agree with the above comment above WikiReviews. But disturbingly, I have heard a lot about paid reviews. Recently I saw a gig wherein a person was offering to tarnish competitors reviews for 5$ on Odesk. I don’t think you can fully trust any review platform for sure.

I do like the sound of WikiReviews and I think that anything that attempts to remove the influence of fake reviews is a good step forward. I see far too much manipulation on the internet and too many people faking objective reviews.
