KeywordLuv: How Using It Benefits Us All

Do Follow Blogs - Click for image credit

Time is our most precious resource. All bloggers and business owners wish they had more of it and continually seek ways to accomplish more each day.

Scroll Down for DoFollow CommentLuv KeywordLuv blogs by Niche!

KeywordLuv and CommentLuv are effective ways to make every comment we write or receive provide far more benefits.

I strongly recommend bloggers join the do follow movement and install the CommentLuv and KeywordLuv plugins.

We and many of our favorite bloggers are focusing more and more of our time and efforts exclusively in dofollow blogs. The CommentLuv community is especially strong and readers can easily see CommentLuv featured posts. They may not be aware that installing CommentLuv and registering your site allows you to suggest one of your last ten posts and in the CommentLuv Premium up to five of your top pages or posts.

The benefits of using KeywordLuv are not as obvious to many
so I want to spell them out and explain exactly
why I so strongly recommend using it.

First you need to clearly understand what anchor text is and why it is so important to you.

Anchor text is simply the words used in the actual link that tell the search engines what the page the link points to is about.

Many bloggers are NOT using anchor text effectively or do not even know what phrases are important to them. There is nothing more important to your getting more traffic from the search engines than clearly targeting your best anchor text. Read my building traffic post for how to do this.

BENEFITS OF KEYWORDLUV:

  1. Most bloggers and blog readers dislike keywords in the name field instead of a name. The reason commentators do that is because without KeywordLuv whatever is in the Name field is what is used as anchor text – and that is NOT effective. Installing KeywordLuv fixes that issue by allowing commentators to separate their name from the keywords.
  2. KeywordLuv allows business owners and bloggers to select their own anchor text and pair it with the most targeted landing page.
  3. Bloggers can more clearly understand what their commentators do and what their major interests are based on the keywords they use.
  4. When we blog about our regular commentators we can use the anchor text and links they shared to ensure we are providing them with maximum benefits.

KeywordLuv allows us all to combine commenting and SEO efforts so that we can interact more frequently, strengthen our blogging community relationships and make our sites easier to find in the search engines which will increase our traffic, subscribers and potentially our incomes.

HOW TO USE KEYWORDLUV:

KeywordLuv is simple to use. Instead of putting your name or keywords into the Name field of a comment, use YourName @ Your Keywords.

Here are some examples so everyone is clear on the idea:

Notice that only the keyword phrase is linked and that is exactly what your comment name field will look like too. You can vary the anchor text you choose.

For maximum benefit choose specific pages or posts optimized for each phrase and link that specific page/post to that specific keyword phrase.

You will not end up with enough incoming links to any one page if you do not send specific keyword phrases to specific pages/posts. You can maximize the effectiveness of what you write by optimizing a page specifically for each keyword phrase – especially if you are offering services or products.

Interested in a new career? Get certified on Oracle or Citrix technologies. Download 1Y0-A09 dumps as well as 1Y0-A17 dumps to prepare and pass your exam plus get free demos of 1z0-051 dumps.

That involves good timing in blogs using CommentLuv so read on for how to change your landing page to match your keyword phrase. When you register your site at CommentLuv you entered your URL. For CommentLuv to work you must enter it into the URL field EXACTLY as you registered it including using or not using the www and including or not including the trailing slash / at the end. You may want to copy and paste it somewhere so you can paste it back in later.

If you don’t see your last ten posts in CommentLuv the most likely cause is the URL you entered is not exactly how you registered it.

To link your selected anchor text to a page different than the one you registered with CommentLuv, fill in your comment as usual, select the CommentLuv post you wish to feature and then do this:

Just before you submit the comment, paste the URL of your preferred post/page into the URL field and immediately submit the comment.

It takes CommentLuv some time to realize the URL field has changed. If you forget or take too long you will lose the CommentLuv featured post you selected. If that happens just paste your registered URL back into the Website URL field and click into the body of the comment. That will prompt CommentLuv to find your last ten posts again. Select the one you want, and then change the URL again and immediately submit the comment.

By installing KeywordLuv you allow business and blog owners to help themselves to generate more traffic and more sales.

Some will notice that I keep comments most bloggers would summarily delete. I do this because I know that businesses are in dire economic condition and it is essential that small and online businesses survive and even thrive in spite of the current economic climate. I encourage my fellow bloggers to be forgiving of those who are new and haven’t learned to write excellent comments yet. Is it not better to educate them and even the offshore SEO companies they hire so they can call learn? Many businesses do not have the time or skills needed to leave their own comments and may not know the difference between spam and adding to the conversation. We can educate them and make the world a better place. For those bloggers willing to do more I ask that you participate in my new BizLuv MEME and find out how you can Support Your Favorite Businesses and benefit your own blog at the same time.

Note that not all blogs using CommentLuv or KeywordLuv are Do Follow.

I suspect that many assume they are and I personally find it disingenuous to use  these plugins that are so connected to the dofollow community and make them nofollow. For this reason I choose not to include nofollowed KeywordLuv sites in my KeywordLuv Twitter List. CommentLuv blogs are included on my DoFollow Twitter List. Would anyone prefer that I create a DoFollow CommentLuv List?

DOES DOFOLLOW NEGATIVELY AFFECT PAGE RANK?

It is possible but I have not seen any definitive evidence that it does. LATEST: In the last PageRank update, this blog was dropped from PR4 to PR3 while Kikolani with a similar amount of traffic was raised to PR5. Here are several reasons that this blog is more likely to be penalized by Google than other DoFollow blogs:

  1. I frequently and publicly call Google to task because Google IS Evil.
  2. GrowMap outed Akismet for censoring our best commentators, would not back down when Automattic objected to what we wrote about Akismet, and now offer this Akismet alternative.
  3. Comments that many bloggers would delete are approved here at GrowMap because we know the importance of anchor text for small businesses. We also know that link builders are people too – and often they are bloggers, affiliate marketers, or supporting small businesses.

Even if we were not manually G-slapped for #1 or #2 (and that DOES happen – see what happened to Ron Cripp’s traffic from G when he published a post on how article marketing using completely original content can still work after the Google Panda Farmer update – #3 could definitely be the cause. We DO have links that G would not like.

Each of us has a choice to make. Will we bow down and lick G’s boots or will we do what is right and support each other?

I for one will not bow to their pressures because I know where that road leads. Maybe today you will still have traffic but tomorrow they will want something else from you. Bowing to tyranny never works in the long run. IMPORTANT: I am NOT recommending that other bloggers publicly defy Google or write posts criticizing them – especially if your business income depends on traffic from them for now. I AM recommending that you quietly support each other and build links and especially recommend each other directly in your blogs and across social networks. Read the ongoing Dofollow debate on the link immediately above and Dan’s DoFollow Versus NoFollow post for insights including comments from me and examples of posts here and on popular dofollow sites that have strong pageranks in spite of tons of outgoing links. This indicates that if you quietly allow at least some of your readers links – maybe less than I do here – that you are not very likely to be penalized with lower pagerank. That said, PageRank is not nearly as important as traffic. G can take away ALL your pagerank and still send you just as many visitors. There are many blogs that are PR0 (usually because they inadvertently broke a rule – often by using text link ads or selling text links without no-following them) that have just as much traffic from G after their PR drop than they had before. Eventually, the new Chrome block data can be used as an excuse to remove any site from search engine indexes and claim it is “what the users wanted”. Just as Akismet censors bloggers’ comments, that data will censor our sites right out of the serps. See my post on CrowdSourcing failures for more details.

WHERE TO GET THE PLUGINS:

  • DoFollow plugin – We were using the Semio Logic Do Follow plugin V4.0 but they have removed the page for it from the Internet and their Twitter account has been inactive since Aug 17, 2010. We now use CommentLuv Premium which provides DoFollow as one of the eight built-in plugins. If you use the free version of CommentLuv try one of the others listed on Andy Beard’s DoFollow Plugins List.
  • KeywordLuv plugin – I claimed @KeywordLuv11110 to make the KeywordLuv plugin and this information post easy to find
  • CommentLuv plugin | How to use CommentLuv with IntenseDebate
  • How to tell if your Theme is compatible and how to use KeywordLuv compatibility mode if it isn’t.

I am currently compiling lists of Keyword Love enabled blogs, keywordluv lists and will add keyword luv tools if I find any.

Why should you link to bloggers who use KeywordLuv? Because they understand the importance of anchor text and are highly likely to add high quality links to your sites!

KEYWORDLUV LISTS:

Please leave links to any additional Keyword Luv lists or tools you know of in the comments of this post. Thank you.

KEYWORD LUV BLOGS BY NICHE:

Use these lists to find KeywordLuv enabled blogs in your niche. I highly recommend going beyond exchanging comments to linking to and writing about each other’s sites.

Anchor text is so very important that if you appear in the list below I will edit yours on request. Just leave a comment in this post.

Thanks Jim,

While some believe KeywordLuv only entices spammers it is clear to me and from the comments of others in this post that it can greatly increase traffic and the quality of the discussion.

As businesses, charities and bloggers learn to use it more effectively the dofollow CommentLuv KeywordLuv community will continue to grow exponetially. This post is a heads up for all those who would like to grow with it.

You know even though I have had the KeywordLuv Wordpress Plugin on my blog forever now I still fail to use it any time I comment on other blogs, actually when I went to comment on this post I didn’t even use it.

Of course I went back to fill it in, great post and IT WORKED haha.

Just learning how well the Keywordluv and Commentluv plugins work. Some of the sites I have don’t seem to get many backlinks when leaving comments on Dofollow/commentluv blogs, yet others go through the roof! I constantly learning and testing. We’ll see if the classic car insurance site gets some LUV! I heard that targeting Commentluv blogs that use similar keywords as your site is also important for link-juice. Is that true too?

Welcome Tim,

Links from related sites are the Holy Grail of link building so yes, links from sites using similar keywords are more relevant and therefore more important in the incredibly complex search engine algorithms.

Each blogger passes judgement on every comment left so if you don’t see backlinks I’m guessing that those comments got deleted. Even some bloggers who install KeywordLuv object to businesses using it because they assume they are not interested in being part of their readership and only interested in the link.

I know that businesses need these links and that even if you comment today and don’t come back for weeks or even months that you are probably just very busy and eventually you WILL be back if I have provided you with useful content. (Any business that looks here WILL find extremely important content including how to get 76+ high quality backlinks for $30.)

Targeting the insurance sub-niche of Classic Car Insurance is brilliant by the way. Insurance is so competitive and over-saturated that there are only two ways to go:

1) Target a sub-niche
2) Target people who have similar interests who are not necessarily looking for insurance (but thanks to the mandatory insurance laws aka as legal extortion almost everyone is a potential client)

I know someone who has several garages full of classic cars. If you could save him money on insurance he would be a big fish to land.

So far I’ve made some headway from where I was just a month ago. I stuggled for a year with a few sites that got no traffic. I’m beginning to understand what works but still have lots to learn. Thank you Tim. I hope you will be a regular here both for the links and the content. If you have a physical address for your business I recommend you get it listed in Local Search Directories for the very high quality links and to make you easier to find online.

They are basically online yellow pages but instead of paying for display ads as you would in the print variety you can list far more information and most of them are totally free of charge,

They also allow people to leave business reviews for you that greatly increase your leads.

I think both the KeywordLuv and CommentLuv are great plugins. They do encourage people to leave comments and increase readership. But the problem is getting quality comments as well as going through each comment to weed out those spammy ones. I suppose you will always have to take the good with the bad and make the best out of it. ;)

Hello Audrey,

I suspect there is no such thing as a blog that never gets any spam even if it does not use these plugins and even if it is nofollow. Dofollow blogs are bound to attract more spam and yes, KeywordLuv could make it easier for spammers to select their own anchor text.

I have found, though, that spammers often don’t use the KeywordLuv syntax which makes their spam easier to identify and delete. The major complaint about keywords in the name field is that not leaving your name is unfriendly. KeywordLuv is the obvious solution to that objection.

Hello Chandon,

What I have done in this post is precisely what we as bloggers need to do both for each other and for our favorite small businesses. I don’t mean that anyone’s posts need to have as many links as this one does. I do mean that we should write about, link to and recommend quality businesses regularly.

For a Web site to maintain strong search engine positions it needs to have new incoming links on a regular basis using the words that describe what the page you are linking to contains.

If we all recommend and link to our favorite small and online businesses they will prosper. Their prosperity can be used to create more jobs and as they can spend more with other businesses those other businesses will also thrive.

Every business any of us helps will spread their good fortune to many others. It is impossible to know how far each pay it forward action can ripple. We can all launch more butterflies.

Their domain changed to comluv.com and if you use Twitter you can reach Andy @CommentLuv. This post on How to install CommentLuv on blogspot might be useful to you.

Bloggers using Blogger Blogspot can install CommentLuv. One way is to use CommentLuv for Blogger by installing it with IntenseDebate or by using the
JSkit CommentLuv
version.

I believe there is also a CommentLuv Disqus version but that link doesn’t say where it is and a comment I read indicates that it may be impossible to remove nofollow when using Disqus. (Note that these types of things can change so always check the latest.)

Andy also explains how to import your Blogger Blog into the Comluv network which migrates it to WordPress hosted at Comluv with some plugin capabilities beyond what the free non-self-hosted WordPress versions have.

I find it extremely challenging to find specific information on the ComLuv site so you may want to bookmark or save this post or remember to search for KeywordLuv to locate it again.

Hello again Click,

You know you can’t use CommentLuv on blogspot without using IntenseDebate or JSKit or Disqus? In a reply to a comment on the post about Installing CommentLuv on Blogspot using Disqus Andy wrote:

“blogger is a bit of a pain with its comment form. very hard to do anything with it unless it’s changed to jskit or disqus”

If you contact Andy using CommentLuv Support I am sure he can assist you.

Please read the part of this post about How to Use KeywordLuv as many KeywordLuv enabled blogs will want you to use a name plus keywords like this:

Your Name @ Click On Portal

It is also an excellent idea to add your URL to your Twitter profile so anyone looking at your Twitter account can click through to your blog.

You get to it by clicking on Settings first and then the Profile link ON THE BLUE BAR (not the one between Home and Find People) and entering your URL in the field called Web.

I have found that I ALWAYS have issues leaving comments where the use DISQUS. I have read that others have too. I usually will not leave a comment on a site that uses DISQUS. I am friends with a couple of bloggers that like DISQUIS and refuse to change it out, so I always copy my comment prior to submitting. It will error out or not connect via one of my profiles, so I end up retyping or now, pasting the comment back in.

As far as a name, a first name is fine, but I am getting more stingent about keywords only in the name field. I recommend that you consider putting in at least a first name.

Using KeywordLuv and dofollow plugin on blogs is a proven way to building community as well as attracting spam. I once took advantage of this great traffic attracting duo but it has backfired in terms of filtering genuine comments from link builders to the point that I have to give up on the former and to come up with a stringent comment policy to enforce as I retain the latter.

KeywordLuv can have setbacks as well so using it with extra precaution is recommended because linking back to bad neighborhoods is a no no and having a comment policy in place could go well with it.

Thanks for the mention by the way.

Welcome Mathdelane,

I am sorry to hear that you have allowed spammers to discourage you from offering KeywordLuv and CommentLuv on your blog. I should have checked more carefully and noticed that you no longer offer them.

Almost everything in life has pros and cons. I consider managing more spam in order to support other bloggers and save businesses that might otherwise go under due to the economy a small price to pay. Perhaps you’ll reconsider?

When we look at the larger picture and realize that we can assist local and small online businesses that make the effort to raise their visibility online so they can keep feeding their families and the families of their employees some of what we used to think of as SPAM might not be any more.

I hope those who are not yet persuaded will read the two BizLuv MEME posts. I’ll feature one in CommentLuv for this reply.

I have not mentioned CommentLuv above, did I? I only said that I alienated the idea of using KeywordLuv but remained dofollow. As for using CommentLuv, Andy Bailey even thank me for using it and mentioning his plugin on a post related to dofollow and KeywordLuv abuse which I don’t want to link drop anyway.

FYI, spammers are not a discouragement if I end up dropping KL. It’s my choice.

It certainly makes me wonder why some bloggers are so hooked into this idea of KL so much when in fact, its developer is no longer using it because of the spam problems he has faced himself.

Supporting bloggers is not a problem and that’s one of the reasons why I couldn’t let go of “dofollow” but I hate spam much as everyone else does.

Speaking of small businesses, legitimate ones don’t link drop and go. Splogs pretend to be legitimate blogs leaving comments and trackbacks linking to your site which if you approve wouldn’t do any good but harm.

I support start-ups on my site, in fact, Microsoft BI’s PowerPivot is one of my recently assisted project. Legitimate and genuine businesses, big or small, approach reputable sites. They don’t droplinks and they don’t spam, they talk and engage.

What benefit is there if a blog is dofollow but does not allow anchor text or keywords? A link to your name does nothing for a blogger or small business because:

a) You probably already rank for that anyway whether you are famous or not
b) If someone already knows your name they won’t have any trouble finding you
c) It doesn’t allow you to get better search engine rankings for any of your products or services
d) It doesn’t let others in your commenting circles to learn more about what you do

The entire point of incoming links is to let the search engines know what the content of the page the link points to is (and readers can also discover what else you offer by the anchor text you choose).

The reason KeywordLuv was developed was to allow commentators to be both sociable (by using their names) AND to allow them to have an EFFECTIVE link. Many people object to only having keywords in the name field and I must admit I do prefer to have both a name to reply to and keywords.

It is unfortunate that the developer of KeywordLuv has chosen to stop using it; however, that does not have anything to do with how effective or useful it is. (And we are thankful that he has kept it working.)

I support KeywordLuv for many reasons. Here are a few more:

Being a DoFollow blog that offers KeywordLuv demonstrates a generosity of spirit that will be essential to preventing small businesses online and off to survive. It lets us identify others who care as much for others as they do for themselves.

It will encourage traditional business owners to become active online and raise their visibility with bloggers who are willing to assist them.

Many legitimate small business owners may barely know how to turn on a computer. They have no idea what bad SEO tactics they are being sold until the damage is done.

The people who accept that kind of work usually do not understand the difference between spam and quality commenting – and if we don’t teach them they won’t get any better at writing comments that contribute to the discussion. Even when they do we must show tolerance as they improve their English writing skills.

It is clear to me that what I see as obvious is certainly not yet obvious to many. The U.S. economy is NOT going to recover and only those who are pro-active have any chance of surviving serious economic challenges.

Anything Microsoft (or Google, Yahoo, Monsanto, Disney, ) is involved in is NOT a small business or a start-up. It is more business as usual and the intentional cause behind economic booms and crashes.

As long as the majority continue to be sheep there is no hope to be anything but a passenger along for the ride. It is time for those who can to start driving their own busses.

When they do they need the support from those who already know how to use the Internet, Local Search, and Social Networking. One other thought: should Google and the other big search engines decide to start ignoring these links, collectives of bloggers will be how consumers can still find quality content and ethical businesses.

Hi Kristi,

The more I think about the differences between relationship-building comments and spammy comments it pretty much comes down to quality. IMHO link building is a good thing for us all provided we do it while actually sharing in the discussion.

I for one don’t enjoy commenting for the sake of link building and I do enjoy link building in the course of commenting.

Wow! That is very generous of you Growmap, for listing me with anchor text linking to two different posts! Thank you.

Great suggestion about landing pages attached to specific anchor text too!

It’s funny, I just got Seth Godin’s book “The Big Red Fez – How to Make your Website Better” from the library yesterday and even though this book was written 9 years ago, there are still some great prescient lessons to be learned.

And telling your clients what to do next via a “big banana” is classic Godin. What he means is SIMPLIFY your message and make it OBVIOUS for your clients to figure out what to do next. Excellent advice then, excellent advice now.

Now that I have a much clearer focus on where I’d like my blog to go I can finally start doing some of the “renos” that I’ve postponed until this point!

It’s great to know there is such a support on growmap.com!

And I’ll be sure and link any and every mention of keywordluv to this page (with appropriate achor text, of course!).

Thanks again!

I’m with CJ – there is a LOT of juicy meat on this post and I have to go back and make sure I take advantage of it all.

In the meantime, I got your tweets (although a little late for your current comment on my blog) and I’m happy to say that donpower.me is NOW A KEYWORDLUV ENABLED BLOG (I’ve been a commentLUV blog for a while!).

Thanks for keeping me moving forward on this!

I haven’t quite made the switch yet but I intend to blog primarily about local business social media marketing at donpower.me (and you have been a great resource and motivation for this switch – thanks!) .

So, if I can make it onto one of your lists please use this as the anchor text – Local Business Internet Marketing or Local Business Social Media Marketing. I’ve got to figure out the best way to incorporate this in my blog title so for now I’m keepig my subhead as ‘BLOG with POWER’ until I can change my header logo, etc.

Thanks for all your help! Going to reply to your comment on my commentluv post below now!

Cheers!

That is really great news Don. I added links to both of your anchor text phrases and landed them on two different URLs. You will want to develop pages for your best keyword phrases offering your services.

Although many of us like to be flexible and know that what we do has many options the best thing to do when getting started offering any service is to offer specific tasks for a set price.

By doing that you make the decision-making process simpler. The potential buyer will only have to make two yes/no decisions:

1) Do I believe this service will benefit my business
2) Am I willing to pay what this consultant charges for their expertise

If you decide to create new pages for those two phrases just let me know and I’ll change the anchor text here. I expect this page to be high traffic especially if other bloggers will link to it for the word keywordluv or the phrases keywordluv list or keywordluv lists.

I did fix the plugin issue with the one site and now all my sites are CommentLuv, DoFollow, and KeywordLuv friendly. I have found that my traffic has increased tenfold since the additions of these plugins. If in doubt about using them, ask anyone on that list above how we feel about them :-)

Glad to be of service. I’d love to know more about your free photos for bloggers. I know that some graphic artist is really missing out not providing images for popular blog posts.

Providing photos for the incoming links is another great way to boost traffic. As my readers may have noticed I do always link to my photo sources.

If you have any photos that you feel would fit my existing posts that lack an image do feel free to volunteer. I would be happy to retro-fit them into posts. I often have an image in my head when writing my posts but no way to create it.

Hello James,

I look forward to hearing from you. My older posts do not have photos and I often have an idea for an image. Some of those ideas could possibly be photographed while others would need to be created artistically by editing photos or images.

As an example when I wrote this post the image that popped into my head was someone throwing the water out of a baby bath tub with something representing KeywordLuv in the water.

For those who may not be familiar with the old saying that inspired the title of this post it is “Don’t throw the baby out with the bath water”.

I know that I am graphically challenged so I am always open to the ideas of the artist or photographer. I would have never picked the colors used in my logo but I love what my logo designer created.

Hi Michelle,

Be sure to read the part of my post that explains how to put Keywords in your comments. Why this increases traffic to your site is simple: it moves you to a more dominant position in the search engines.

Most searchers only look at the first page of results. If you aren’t there you won’t get many new visitors from search. The way Google and other search engines decide which site to put on the first page is primarily by how many incoming links go to that site.

Imagine how many more visitors you would get if a search for poster printing in anyone’s favorite search engine featured YOUR SITE.

Until your site ranks for keyword phrases related to your business you are missing out on the lion’s share of the visitors you could receive!

The other way KeywordLuv increases traffic to your site is that people who understand the importance of anchor text and search engine traffic go out of their way to seek out sites that offer them this feature.

Many of my most regular readers and commentators are sharp bloggers who leave exceptional comments. They share their ideas and what they have learned and I do the same for them.

Those who understand being generous creates a better world for all than being selfish are more likely to be dofollow, use CommentLuv and KeywordLuve and actively support each other.

As the old saying goes “You ain’t seen nothin’ yet” – or is that a song lyric?

With some help from my friends we can make this “the” blog post on keywordluv and grow a great keywordluv community. We even have the @KeywordLuv Twitter account to go with it!

This blog already ranks well for numerous variations of DoFollow and if you look in my Most Popular section you’ll see that post is currently number one.

This post has already hit page one for keywordluv lists at Google and Bing and as long as enough other bloggers link to it with the word keywordluv or the phrase keywordluv list or keywordluv lists it should stay there.

Hi Dennis,

Each blogger can be as strict or as lenient as they desire about which comments to keep and which to delete. Since this is a teaching blog I am more lenient here than I am in other blogs I advise or manage for others.

Spammers are likely to find this blog first now when searching for KeywordLuv so maybe they’ll start learning that spam is a bad idea and leaving quality comments makes far more sense.

The problem with SEO workers + spammers are the places that hire people to put out 100 comments for some really cheap rate. You can look on freelance job networks, Short Task, etc. and see that people are paying something like 5 cents a comment, so you have people that have no clue what the topic of a blog post is about – they just want to get their link and their payment.

Plus, many are commenting about industries they know nothing about – so their comments, on top of it all, make no sense. It’s like if I were to start commenting on legal sites for a lawyer – I could probably make something up, but if a lawyer were running the blog, they would probably figure out after a bit I had no clue what I was talking about.

Not many in the SEO / link building industry get training on how to read a blog post and leave a relevant, good comment. They get trained to do the most comments in the least amount of time. Plus they are building programs to make commenting more automated everyday, so people can do it in even less time, which leads to more short, useless comments.

I honestly think that the only SEO / link building types that get the point of valuable comments to get links back to their site are the ones that own blogs themselves. Once you’ve moderated a couple of hundred comments, you get the feel of a spam vs. legitimate comment.

Thank you for explaining this aspect of the issue so well Kristi. Another issue is that these types of comment jobs often go to people whose native language is not English. Even when they do their best to leave a relevant comment they may struggle.

I was once fluent in one other language (too many decades ago to remember most of it now) and understand more than I speak of another so I know how difficult it is to write in another language.

That is why I am more lenient than many business blogs can be – I am more about teaching and less about what others might think of my letting them comment here. If I just delete their comments they can’t learn from my feedback or get practice at better commenting.

While the issue of language will remain, the enormous growth of dofollow and hundreds of thousands of blogs using CommentLuv and strong adoption of KeywordLuv will mean more opportunities to comment within our areas of expertise and still do link building.

Internet users will get better at locating other related sites and this will greatly increase the quality of the comments too.

That’s a good and noble practice to implement but the problem lies in that many fly by commentors won’t ever see your coaching – they drop the comment and run to the next blog to proclaim its superiority over the last 65 they commented on. But I suppose if you can get a few people to change their ways it may be worth it – it’s just a tough fight.

I’m going to leave this comment because without it the others won’t make any sense. [But in reviewing comments as I do regularly it ended up getting deleted.] It is also a good lesson in what to do about moderating these types of comments.

This particular commentator is a challenge to moderate because while they do leave real comments they often also leave comments for more than one business in the same post or spammy comments.

It is also obvious that English is not their native language and I suspect that more than one person is commenting from that IP address. Normally I would have deleted that comment on two counts:

1) I do not link to sites related to pharmaceuticals
2) The comment is not specific to this post

I do delete many of their comments but retain some of them when they are relevant to a specific post and do not link to a business I would avoid. The reason I keep some is that some of the businesses that hire these services do so because they don’t fully understand what they do or how best to go about Internet marketing.

With the current economic challenges some links may mean the difference between keeping that business open or letting it fail. Many small businesses support their own families and also those of employees and what they earn gets spent and keeps more businesses open.

I do not allow links to any site whose content I find objectionable so I removed not only the link from that comment but also the word after generic. Bloggers should avoid leaving links to adult sites and some other subjects and bad neighborhoods.

You can also use the Bad Neighborhood Tool but you do have to manually check those links because it often flags sites that are not bad.

P.S. For my non-English readers, we would not say we “depleted” the morning. While it is true the morning passes, depleted refers more to a tangible resource you can use up rather than the non-tangible (something you can’t touch or hold) time passing.
