I am seeing all kinds of posts that warn against creating too many backlinks too fast.. Is it so? Is there any optimal strategy for this?

Hi Mike,
Yes, you can trigger issues with algorithms growing links too fast because that will make computers think you are using article marketing, comment or trackback spamming, and other automated methods.
You need to grow backlinks gradually and they need to be from different types of sites using different anchor text. (For those who don’t know, the anchor text is the words that are actually linked.)
In other words you don’t want all of your links to be your keyword phrase or your niche. You want some to http://www.yourdomain.com others to yourdomain.com or http://yourdomain.com or http://www.yourdomain.com and you want those to land on the home page as often as internal pages.
You want other links to be “click here” and “your keywords” and “random words in the content”. Having too many of any one kind of incoming link or too many to the same keyword phrase triggers Google’s system to investigate you and their “spam team” to send you their “unnatural links profile” messages.

Email is problematic because I get so much of it – and right now my primary email address is not working well. If you must use email, send to growmap at the Google mail I hate so much.

First let me say that adding your URL to a comment is a good way to get it deleted and that is totally unnecessary on most blogs because you already get a link in your comment. Note that your name is linked to your site and on blogs like this one that use CommentLuv Premium or KeywordLuv you can even choose your own anchor text. See How to Use KeywordLuv for details.
You need to ensure that you build links of all different types because Google is penalizing sites for having “unnatural” link profiles which generally means you have too many of the same kind and/or links from unrelated sites.
The most efficient way to build quality links is to for a collaboration of related blogs who are regular contributors of guest content to each other. Get to know each other and link to related posts on each other’s blogs. Then do guest posts on larger sites as well.

Just trying to understand, does linking back to each other not amount to link exchange in Google’s eyes.

Hi Brad,
If I can fit them in I can sometimes do 48 hours. Depends on where you want published and how tight your deadline is and how many other projects I have going. None of my writing is outsourced – it is all me.
All my contact info is on the contact tab here including phone number. Best to Skype (only GrowMap there) or phone for time sensitive projects.
