Fear. There is no doubt that this – in it’s simplest form – is what Google is instilling in millions of webmasters, bloggers, SEO Agents, and online marketers in general that are in a constant battle to please the search engine giant.
It’s no secret that the giant snowball started roughly 2 years ago when the first Panda release to combat various forms of spam and duplicate content was released. At the time, this was taken fairly well by those that followed “the rules” – didn’t comment spam, link farm, or submit spun articles all across the web. Then things got worse – much worse.
I have been providing SEO services for some time now and pleasing Google was always goal number one. The “lesser” search engines had a degree of importance, but satisfying Google was certainly the number one priority.
As the title includes the word “fallacies”, the list is rather long in just how Google is increasingly becoming the inferior search engine on the web. I’ll try not to go all over the map in this post. The fact is, it could really be broken into possibly three posts, depending on just how much you can take at one time.
I’ll start with linking and the fear involved – the “false” fear
over Google that has recently had site owners consumed.
Over the course of many years, my company Mid Carolina Freelance, LLC developed well over two dozen sites or so. These sites – for the most part – are still going today and still serving the purpose for which they were established. Each of these sites were formed for a specific purpose. Some were article marketing sites, some blogs.
Their core purpose was to provide a place that my company could post original content on behalf of our clients. Other writers were welcome. We certainly didn’t want lop-sided sites that real readers questioned. They needed to have standards of course. All this said, these websites have worked hard and have all served their purpose. They still do today.
Recently I have been inundated with email after email asking me to remove this link here and that link there. Some are almost a year old. At first I asked, even though their email explicitly detailed the reason. And at first I asked (in the most respectful of ways) if they were kidding.
“No, please remove them ASAP. We are trying to avoid
Google penalties.” I laughed in silence.
Here these webmasters and SEO Agents have spent hundreds – if not thousands – of dollars building links through articles or whatever and now they want to spend the same or more reversing their work. Insanity is what I call it. What I wonder – with all due respect – is whether or not they are testing Google. Are you reading a post like this and reacting? Is it something you heard through the grapevine? Whatever instigated it, it is like a false scare from the CDC or some international epidemic.
Let’s look at Google’s blunders over the last six or so months – then decide for yourself if it’s time to push back. Google is becoming infamous for giving you the results they want you to see, but the truth is like a JFK conspiracy theory.
It is no real secret that Google suffered a pretty significant loss in the third quarter of 2012. However, if you Google “Google 3rd quarter earnings report 2012″, the first search result is – you guessed it – Google’s own investor link. Here is a quote regarding the report:
MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif. – October 18, 2012 – Google Inc. (NASDAQ: GOOG) today announced financial results for the quarter ended September 30, 2012.
“We had a strong quarter. Revenue was up 45 percent year-on-year, and, at just fourteen years old, we cleared our first $14 billion revenue quarter,” said Larry Page, CEO of Google. “I am also really excited about the progress we’re making creating a beautifully simple, intuitive Google experience across all devices.”
And directly below their search are entirely different, yet very consistent results. CNN Money reported an 8% drop in stock prices and what they called the 3rd quarter earnings “grim”. Forbes’ headline chose to use Google’s “Big Miss on Profit”. Each of the latter were inline with an 8% drop. Why the discrepancy? Moving right along.
Before I go howling at the moon or rambling, I do my due diligence first. Has been my historical approach to SEO, if I am “testing” I always use my own sites first – never a client’s. About four months ago, I launched my new web design and SEO site to consolidate.
After the site indexed in its entirety, it was on page one for several of the keywords I had chosen. I have come to the conclusion that focusing on your local market is wiser than the whole world. Even good ol” fashioned word-of-mouth gets me more work than a page one position.
With my new Google page one serp, I decided to play with some old methods on purpose, without concern or care about Google’s reaction. Hard and fast link building, blog posts linking in, you name it.
Three days later, I wasn’t even ten pages deep. Gone.
I visited Yahoo!, Bing, and AOL.com. Position held with these guys.
What did I do? Nothing. I left it alone.
One week…two weeks…ahh, there we are. I was back. Another week. Page 6. One more week, pages 2 – 4. Hmmm….
So let’s talk about algorithm problems. Google has everyone jumping in fear, yet their own algorithms are simply horrendous. Skewed. Out-of-whack. They want to prevent spam, yet they spam their own site. What content do they spam the most? Their own. The best example I can give is YouTube (Google’s video search engine).
So, here we go. I do a keyword search for my web design site. “Web Design Columbia SC”. Page one, position two is an ancient YouTube video. No problem. It’s still relevant. The web design firm still exists. That’s cool. On to page two. Position one – same EXACT YouTube link, excerpt, etc.
Duplicate content on their own website. Shame Google. Hypocrisy.
I realize now that there really should be a two part series to this post, so I am going to shift gears to make my initial point – pushing back. We all know the old saying about voting for your candidate. Some refuse with the idea that a single vote doesn’t matter. It does matter. If millions of people can choose the candidate they feel should run their country, then the same can be done with search engines.
Know in advance that I have no allegiance to Bill Gates or Microsoft, but it just so happens that Bing is steadily becoming a stronger search engine with each passing day. Do they have work to do? Yes. Do they need support from you? Yes. Until I write part 2, I encourage you to read a post about how Bing is starting to outpace Google.
It’s time to push back at Google. The only way to do this is to let them know that they are not the only search engine out there. Let their stock continue to plummet. Let their users migrate elsewhere. This is the only way to get them – or anyone – to take notice that you can’t push those around that made you who you are.

Yahoo, AskJeeves, Dog Pile, Bing, Yippy, Mahoola and, in particular, DuckDuckGo are all excellent search engines which offer just as good a service as Google does. The trouble is every SEO and business sort wants their site doing well on Google. With such a vast amount of traffic and users it’s no real suprise. I don’t think anything is going to change all of a sudden to topple them, much like Facebook. However, having used DuckDuckGo with great success I think Google could, eventually, be forced into less stringent actions.

Hello Ranvir,
Sites like this are most likely going to be among the earliest to get delisted, so I highly recommend people SAVE URLS that are important to them using methods that can not be remotely erased because it will get harder and harder for you to find them again in Google.

Great post. Day-by-Day Google updates are coming out, and we all have suffer in some or the other way. Google is ready to battle then why we are moving back let’s face it updates with our weapons. Recently I thought I thought on this topic and you know I made a list of Blogs Accepting Posts with update PageRank and Domain Authority, so that we can ready our blog to battle.

The issue here is that Google is slowly killing itself – by decreasing end user experience and making it more difficult to low profile spammers. The big guys in the industry will figure ways to beat every algorithm change anyways – its small business and regular users who get penalized for this war…
Hey,
Excellent post. well, SEO is a long term Game and it is true that Google is doing a lot of turns at the moment. Google has been updating search engine with Panda update, Penguin update and EMD update.
They are trying as much as they can to stop spam to show in search engines.
I just like the way they are doing every thing.
Nice post.

No doubt, Bing is becoming stronger by the day. And it’s working hard. But we are yet to see if they can get people rid of the Google habit.
Google’s updates are a direct result of this threat by Bing. They are trying to improve the search quality.

Hi Gautam,
Google’s monopoly is dangerous. Tomorrow they may decide to send you 30% less traffic or 60% or none at all. Then how will you feel about them? Eventually whether you make changes or not they might give you more traffic or they may not. Nothing you can really do about that.
We need to clearly understand that we (most Internet users) have handed Google a monopoly so strong that they can decide what businesses survive and which die. They can – and often do – take away any amount of your traffic at their whim.
On top of that their CEO has publicly stated their intention to favor big brands and that is what every update has done. They are systematically taking away the converting keywords from deserving small businesses, hiding their products on Google product search, and handing ALL the business to big brands.
I for one do not want to live in a world where Google decides what I can find, limits what products I can buy, and controls where I can shop. They have also already announced that their ideal for their search engine is to return ONE RESULT for any given search. So if you think what I see is ridiculous just think about that.
ONE “choice” = no choice. Big Brands only = no choice I personally want. We handed them this monopoly and we can take it away. All we have to do is use other search engines and I don’t mean Bing. I mean independent search engines that are not corporate controlled like http://DuckDuckGo.com – try it out. Their results are much cleaner and they don’t track you everywhere, record everything you do, and hide small businesses.
Mark my words – the day will come when Google de-indexes sites a few at a time until there are no more sites like this one and no more small businesses either. Time will tell that I am right. I can’t say if that will be next year or ten years from now, but believe me it IS coming.

Whats that old saying “Never put all of your eggs in one basket”?
That is what we live by!
Google is just that, nothing more than a monopoloy. We the people have created this company, and now the ones that helped create it are getting punished. Day in and day out we see this with our own website. Number one ranked pages go completely off the grid for days, and then may pop back on page three, two even one sometimes. There are results from years ago, outdated material that shouldn’t even be near page one. But “You guessed it, its a LARGE corporation.
Our philosify is just what we said above, spread your work around some. If you are relying solely on Google for your traffic, what are you going to do when you wake up some day and “Poof its ALL gone” because one of Google’s algorithm’s didn’t think your site serves up quality content? You may have the best site on the Web, but one of the coporate monsters that has DEEP pockets wants there content on the first page even if they haven’t done half the work that you have done with SEO and design. And yes, I have seen coporate sites that well, let me just say my 10yr old nephew could have done a better job.
Gail, and when you say use other search engines and not “Bing” we do just that. http://DuckDuckGo.com is a great search engine, and yes we do get traffic from them
Each time Google de-indexs sites we hope its not us, but at the same time we really dont care because like I said we dont put everything in one basket. We would rather spend our time building our own list’s. Lists that WE CONTROL, and not something Google can take away from us over night.
Excellent post as always!

Hi Ted,
Thank you for this comment. It confirms what I keep telling people – that Google is intentionally churning who appears on the first page the same way they cleverly substitute junk traffic for a few days of converting traffic in AdWords.
Anyone who believes they can keep Google happy and their site listed is living in lala land because we do not control what Google chooses to list or rank – they do – and they ARE evil.

Thanks for posting this; I thought it was just me. I wanted to see where a few of my posts came up because I’ve been working to really craft my site, optimize, monetize, etc. I saw something interesting if not strange. My G+ listing of my post and my post on the blog both came up. Interesting thing is that my G+ posting was higher than my actual blog post. Now, I know this is not a huge indicator but it made me think that they are really trying to make G+ more relevant, aren’t they. I’ve been researching and while I am practicing the SEO fundamentals, I am not interesting in putting all my eggs in Google’s basket. I’m looking at the Bing/Yahoo connection a lot more. I’ll keep an eye but I am really disgusted with Google’s “Ivory Tower” process. Thanks for showing me I’m not crazy

Hi D,
This is interesting that you bring this up. This was actually going into the next part of the post. I would like for you to try something. Whatever browser you use, log completely out of ALL Google accounts, then clear your browser cookies and cache. Close the browser, open it back, and do the same search. I’ll gamble that the original post’s serp may or may not be about the same, with the G+ no where in site. Let me know,
Bryan
LOL, I did that and I even used another browser that\’s not even logged into Google at all. Now my previous searches showed that my posts were coming up on the first page and the G+ share of the post was higher. When I did this little experiment, only one of my posts shows in the search on page 2 (which is not bad considering). That result aligns with Bing\’s results.
So what I\’m seeing is that by being logged in with a \”full\” cache, Google was giving me a false SERP reading…

Hi D.,
Exactly. Sometimes it’s better, sometimes it’s worse. But good or bad, what bothers me is that this is a way to force people to use Google products and services – in this case G+. I saw this coming a long time ago when I knew that in 2015, Google loses their patent on PageRank. They were / have been preparing for a replacement, and Facebook paved the way as far as a major social media site and concept.

Google shows personalized results that are still personalized even if you log out. If you want to see what others see try these:
http://yoast.com/tools/seo/disable-personalized-search-plugin
http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/disable-googles-personalization-search-results/ (for Chrome only)
This gives you unpersonalized results as much as that is possible – everyone sees personalized results so you can’t really, but these are closer.

@GrowMap, thanks for the site but I guess the fact that we have to take off the “glasses” we didn’t know we had on is the concern. I should see what others see regardless…the results shouldn’t be pre-skewed.
@Bryan, They have been inflating the G+ numbers. Google seems to have become that which they admonish: Evil. At any time they could shut you down and you have no real recourse. It’s frightening for many. When FB came around, it was like they were feeling their age. I won’t lie; I’m a fan of FB and am looking forward to seeing what they unveil regarding advertising in the next few years. They have made social contexting their own and I wouldn’t be surprised if they come up with some AdSense-like tool. But your prediction about 2015…I’ll be looking forward to seeing what happens. Two years is a long time.
Cheers!

What a good read. I’d recently gone through Victor Solovey’s post ‘Is Google a ripe candidate to be overtaken as a search engine?’ in seommotips.com. You both share some valid and genuine concerns about how Google is acting recently. The multiple standards of Google made webmaster’s life almost impossible.
It would certainly be nice to have a stronger competitor to Google but Microsoft itself is not good enough to rely on and don’t see any other player on the ground in near future.
Don’t know how it will go forward.

Try http://DuckDuckGo.com and remember that they do not have the advantage of the media promoting them that Google has (and Bing or Yahoo! might get at some point).
We need to be wise enough to know that Google is only on top because they are continually touted in everything from soap operas to prime time TV to the evening news to movies, newspapers and online everywhere. They are not “best” – they are “most promoted”.

Google has definitely made some dramatic on website owners and have many frustrated and running for the hills over penalties and results that are all over the board. There has to be some sort of blow back from website owners switching to Bing or other search engines if nothing else out of frustration. I do not really see how some of the things their doing benefits users.

Hello Bryan,
As long as Google is a (programmed) machine there will be many people trying to reverse engineer the system. Whatever algoritm they introduce. As long as not every page is manually indexed it will never be possible to completely prevent crappy websites ranking in Google.

The team trying to reverse engineer Google is much bigger than the team who is creating the algorithms

What really gets me though, is that they implement these changes, like the recent “ads above the fold” change where they penalize sites with too many ads above the fold. LOL Have they looked at their own search results lately? There are many products searches, dare I say most, that contain 1 or zero organic results above the fold, the rest is Adwords ads, their shopping results, local results and videos, ALL from their own sites. Hypocritical to say the least. What a joke.

You are absolutely correct. If you get a chance (especially during this holiday season), Google something along the lines of “Hygiene Products” or “Haircare for Ladies”. Google gets it two-fold here. The search results are not only inundated with Adwords image ads, but they are even more specific to use companies that incorporate their “Google Checkout” payment portal system!

Thanks for the article Bryan. I would have to agree that most of these algorithmic changes are for Googles own good, not for the websites that occupy their webpages or even the people typing in the searches. Some may argue and say whats wrong with that. I would compare it to the airlines increasing the temperature of the air inside the cabins for fuel savings, or adding an extra row of seats to pack more people on the plane. Great for the airline, not for the passengers. And yes, there is nothing wrong with google trying to make things better for themselves, if they stayed consistent and followed a specific path to increased usability. However, what i see is that most times they say its ok to do something one way, and then 6 months later they say its not, at least from an seo standpoint. I would find it very discouraging to live in a homeowner association that said the 2 colors available to paint your house are tan or white. Then after 6 months, right after you and half the other residents just got done painting your homes, they say the 2 colors now available are olive and brown and all houses must adhere to this within the next 12 months. So, we go out and repaint our homes. 6 months later, it happens again. And this goes on and on. Will I continue to use google, yes for the time being, but I do find myself using some of the other search engines more and more, not only for website seo, but for my personal searches as well.
Twitter: brphollis
November 16, 2012 at 6:28 pm
Very good! Great analogies you chose here. I don’t mind saying that I still use Google. BUT, I also find myself immediately doing a duplicate search in other search engines, and the better they get, the less I will use Google. Keep it mind, I am not asking for search results to be in my favor (although this is everyone’s dream), I simply want to avoid skewed results, self promotion to the extreme and skewed results.
Thanks for reading, Bryan
Bryan, many good points here. I stopped using G as my search engine a few months back because I found that the results were of a poor nature. Case in point: while doing research on brochure design I found that the first position result was a rip off with only partial content, from a ezine article writer. The original article was down at the bottom of the page. So much for original content being placed ahead of spammers’ rip offs.
I now use Bing.

Hi Billy,
I am still hopeful that DuckDuckGo is a true alternative and not a front for Bing the way Scroogled.com ended up going. We are so late into the game now that it should become obvious to more and more people that Microsoft, Google and all the other major corporations do not compete fairly. The game is fixed and we need to create our own independent alternative sites and use theirs to find people who belong with us.
The masses will never wake up to how conditioned they are about everything, but there is a small minority of intelligent people who can quietly claim self-sufficiency and freedom outside of their systems.
