Umair sent me a link to a post he just published on his SEO Advice and Social Strategy blog voicing his concerns about Google’s Personalized Search Results.
I left a comment in that post and am publishing a more complete reply here because this is such an important subject:

Congratulations, Umair. You are one of the few whose mind still works well enough to clearly see the consequences of allowing one monopoly to determine what you see and know about.
Few realize that what the general public sees and hears has long been controlled by those who own the media. Although there is an illusion of an impartial media with differing viewpoints, what we see is really only polarized versions controlled by the same people.
Divide and conquer is the oldest strategy in the playbook.
An elaborate version of that is what we get online today:
Polarized views pitting two sides against each other:
- Republican vs Democrat
- Christian vs Muslim
- Liberals vs Conservatives
- Tea Party vs Occupy
Spinning the information to create the most dissension so the two sides are unlikely to share notes – and all the while never telling the entire truth to either side.
ALTERNATIVE SEARCH ENGINES:
Google is NOT the only search engine!
The question is: are there any independent search engines that can
tell all the cleverly created disinformation from any truth some may write?I hope so.
Try the independent search engine DuckDuckGo.com
and others instead of ONLY using Google.
We need to collectively research alternative search engines and compile the information. If you have posts or lists or details please feel free to add them to the comments here.
Related links ARE welcome and although comments with many links will go to moderation I manually approve them. DoFollow links and attribution will be provided for all who contribute.

GOOGLE UNPERSONALIZED:
When you do search on Google, first log out of all things Google and then use Google unpersonalized:
- Yoast information to Disable Personalized Search
- SEOMoz ~ Google’s Un-Personalized Search. Tools to Hack the Code.
Third, we must all SAVE the urls to sites we find valuable because they are already being pushed further and further down in the serps and eventually they are likely to disappear altogether.
And lastly, seek out the blogs of others in your physical location and in the niches of the most important topics you research. Interact with them in the comments.
IMPORTANT: Exchange MANY different methods for contacting each other because your Twitter or Facebook or Google+ account can be easily made to disappear – taking with it all your contacts – UNLESS you have saved them in alternative ways.
Google has declared war on small businesses
and on anyone who uses SEO for organic results.
The most brilliant SEO agency owner I know – Marty Weintraub @AimClear – just published a post about Organic Keyword Tracking on SEO Survival in the Age of Vanishing Keywords that illustrates yet another way Google IS Evil.

Just when I thought I had a grip on Google’s various strategies. Everyday i keep on learning something new to help my SEO. Thanks.
Yes I totally agree with your point. Google is trying to divide and conquer by providing results that we want to see rather than showing us the facts. But I believe that if Google has a lot of updates each year then it should not need to do so. It should show what the actual details instead of trying to fool the user because then it becomes more difficult for us to check the keyword positions and the like.

If you want your search to be unpersonalised, then hold down ‘Ctrl, Shift, N’ this should open up ‘Incognito mode’ from here you can search without it being turned into a personal one by google.
Plus i dont think signing out of your gmail account is enough these days.

Hi Michael,
No, just logging out isn’t enough, but I also see different results using the Google unpersonalized searches explained in this post when I am logged in so I believe we must do both. Even then how do we really know how manipulated what we see is?
We also don’t really know if using methods provided for opting out of tracking actually opt us out of anything – or are a red flag that we might be worth checking over!
Most of us simply do not have the technical background to be able to verify what is happening in our own computers much less what happens as we use the Internet – or smartphones or gps devices.

Interesting, great read – I had always figured search results might differ on my machine versus the general public.
This is something i did a long time ago, I really hate how they started doing that.

I do know that there is a way to disable it using a very simple code by simply typing it in before your search….either way it is kind of wrong that Google is tracking you i suppose.

My blog is quite young, but I’ve done, what I think, is a good job on most of the pages SEO wise. It ranks quite well on Bing and Yahoo. I’ve not gone mad one back links, but it still does fine. Google is a different story. Actually, I was testing a google +1 plugin and had +1′d my blog. I nearly had a heart attack as my site appeared on 1st page Google. Of course it was because I’d +1;d it and was logged into Google

I’m unhappy with the noises Google are making, not only with their search engine but also regarding Android, and making it less open, but that’s another story..

I think Google has become everybodies pet hate……. and to be honest they desrve it, more annoying is they still continue on blindly without listening to its users.
