As I predicted, Google has killed PostRank. Whenever something is truly useful, it is absorbed by what I call collectively “The Borg” – then crippled (as PostRank was) and later killed off (as is happening to PostRank May 1, 2012).

The same thing happened when Yahoo! acquired MyBlogLog and I wrote that Yahoo! Killed MyBlogLog.

Here is the text of the email I received today:

PostRank Sunsetting May 1, 2012

It is bittersweet news that we remind our users that PostRank will be sunset on May 1, 2012.
The sweet part is that Google Analytics now allows you to conduct much of the same measurement and analytics that you’ve enjoyed through PostRank. We invite you to access the new Social reports within Google Analytics. If you don’t already have a Google Analytics account it’s free and easy to sign up. Learn more about the new Social reports in our blog post.As of May 1st, PostRank.com, PostRank Analytics, Top Posts widgets, and Google Reader plugin, will be taken offline.Regards,
The PostRank team
PostRank has been acquired by Google, this communication is from © 2011 Google Inc. 1600 Amphitheatre Parkway, Mountain View, CA 94043Email Preferences: We sent you this email because you have indicated that you are willing to receive updates about PostRank’s products and services. If you do not wish to receive such emails in the future you can opt-out here.

Fortunately for businesses and bloggers, there are now two solutions that are better than PostRank was:

BlogDash Sunset

  • PostRank blog: PostRank sunsetting post has already been removed by Google – As of May 1st, 2012, PostRank.com, PostRank Analytics, Top Posts widgets, and Google Reader plugin, will be taken offline.
  • CMSWire: Google Killing PostRank.com and PostRank Analytics on 1 May
  • ReadWriteWeb: they also accurately predicted Google will kill PostRank
  • YourDigitalSpace: New Google Analytics Social Reports Will Replace PostRank

Google has closed all that does not bring profit this year, even if certain services it was useful to certain people, they do not make profits for Google, sorry but the truth is “money is the king”.

It is a shame that so many useful sites get bought and broken by the large players. Neither GroupHigh and BlogDash seem like decent alternatives though GroupHigh looks like it *might* actually be good if you want to pay for it.

SOP for business I guess, if it is not something that really help them to gain something they usually kill them. Of course, who would put a lot of money of something that is not useful.

To be perfectly honest, I was very disappointed to hear Google would purchase PostRank in the first place. I loved their integration with Google Reader. Alas, everyone knows good stories never last. The minute I heard Google would buy PostRank, it became clear they would screw it up and end up killing it. I’ve waited many months to see if there would be a revival under a new name, so far to no avail.

Goodbye postranks, welcome Google Analytics. I am aware that it is free but there are some reports that you are required to pay at a fixed price. Google is actually hooking us up in their secret money making strategy.

Hi Jason Homes,

Actually, Google is hooking you up to their system where their AdWords advertisers pay to test keyword phrases and then when Google sees which ones convert they take those phrases away from the small businesses and hand them to their big brand buddies. It is definitely THEIR secret money making strategy but decidedly not good for smaller advertisers unless they get in early and are among the first to test new phrases.

I already expected that Google would do that. Once a certain engine becomes a fad for the online marketer, it will surely be altered by the great Panda. Hence, it is important that we have special flavor of creativity in promoting our blogs and other.

I blooming loved postrank. Especially the Chrome Extension. It made filtering RSS feed for quality / well shared content simple and enabled me to see how our content faired against the competition. I really dont see how this service has been wrapped into Google Analytics – well, it hasnt.

I’ve been looking for an alternative plugin that does the same but no joy.

Nice post – cheers

Hi Jonnie,

There really isn’t anything like that part of what PostRank used to provide, but GroupHigh comes the closest if you want to identify the top blogs in your location or niche. I have a private arrangement with them to provide custom data for that – but I can’t think of anything that allows us to see how our content compares to a competitor’s.

My philosophy is that we must stop worrying about competition and focus on collaborating with the other best businesses in each niche and location. By doing this small businesses can thrive and use blogs to educate consumers on why we should be supporting them and creating local economies and communities.

When more than one business promotes what they do together they create more demand instead of fighting over their existing customer base. This will generate far more income for all concerned – and at the same time maintain sustainable profits. Those who continue to compete will eventually put themselves under as they squeeze profits and provide poorer quality service.

Page Rank is such a useful tool. A quick and easy indicator.

It’s such a shame that Google decided to “retire” Postrank, I used to find it so useful having it on my Google Reader to discover some of the best posts to read and comment on in my ever growing list of RSS Feeds.
