Best post about Facebook charging to reach your friends and fans

Click image to read “Facebook: The Biggest ‘Bait ‘n’ Switch’ in History?”

Facebook is deliberately showing your content to less people to make you pay to reach that audience ~ and that has sparked a HUGE controversy.

The new “feature” is Promoted Posts and relies on Facebook’s EdgeRank algorithm to determine who sees what you share at Facebook. This applies to both personal and fan pages. (More on that below.)

Dangerous Minds called this “The Biggest Bait ‘n’ Switch in History” and their post generated 726 comments and 5907 reactions in one week. In that post – which you can read by clicking on the image – they quote Ryan Holiday’s post on Observer.com Facebook Broken on Purpose: Why Getting It Wrong Pays More Than Getting It Right. Here is the short version:

“It’s no conspiracy. Facebook acknowledged it as recently as last week: messages now reach, on average, just 15 percent of an account’s fans. In a wonderful coincidence, Facebook has rolled out a solution for this problem: Pay them for better access.

FACEBOOK PROMOTED POSTS VIDEO:

On this week’s Future of Engagement Murray offers some additional background and insights about Facebook Advertising and paying to reach your own fans:

Video Highlights:
  • Earnings are up according to Facebook’s new earning statement
  • Engagement is up over 800%
  • Facebook is trying to wring more money out of users

FACEBOOK EDGERANK AFFECTS PERSONAL AND FAN PAGES

Facebook is reducing who sees ALL content shared on both personal pages – between individuals and their friends and family – and fan pages belonging to brands, bloggers, musicians, artists – anyone who wants to stay in touch.

WHAT POSTS CAN BE PROMOTED:

According to this Facebook Promoted Posts Help File:

From your personal account:

You can only promote posts you’ve shared recently, typically within the last 6 hours. Group posts and private messages are not eligible to be promoted.

People with 5,000 or more friends and subscribers cannot promote their posts. If you want to reach an audience greater than 5,000 people, consider creating a Facebook Page.

From a Facebook Page:

Only Pages with at least 400 likes can promote their posts. You can promote Page posts while you’re creating them or within about 3 days after posting.

FACEBOOK CONTROVERSY

There are basically two camps in this controversy:

  1. Those who say Facebook can do whatever they want.
  2. People who consider this a bait and switch strategy.

On top of investing time or paying someone to create a presence on Facebook,
many PAID FACEBOOK FOR ADVERTISING to get the fans they have that
they can now not reach unless they PAY AGAIN.

“So when I leave Facebook because they screwed over all my small business friends or anyone with a big friends list, how does that profit Facebook? I think the point isn’t “do they have a right to do it?’ but “Why would they shoot themselves in the foot like that?” I’m not on Facebook to get posts from Bloomingdales! Thats why everyone uses spam filter in emails, we don’t want to volunteer ourselves to more advertisements from companies we are already fully aware of. Facebook will become a ghost town if it continues with this!” ~ Christina Hoerler ~

Blogs that have large followings have added up the cost and realize they’ve been priced off of Facebook. IF what Facebook charged was reasonable there would be less uproar. It is the fact that you would need to be insane (or really egotistical with the bucks to back up your vanity) to actually pay what they’re charging that will keep this a hot topic.

HOW TO GET MORE FACEBOOK VISIBILITY WITHOUT PAYING

If you want to get Facebook to share your content with more people, you have to get those people interacting with that content. If they do, theoretically Facebook WILL show them your updates. Theoretically. (Sorry, lurkers, if you don’t interact you won’t see it.)

One way to get around the limitations created by the EdgeRank algorithm is to encourage your fans to create an interest list for your content – but for that to work they have to actually click on that list to see the content which may be unlikely unless you periodically remind them – which might mean paying to do that.

The best solution is to get them to subscribe directly to your content via your mailing list. With FeedBurner RSS being in limbo, RSS may fade so you want to be focused on building your list. We recommend the FeedBurner Alternative FeedBlitz.

SHOULD YOU PAY FACEBOOK?

First look to see how much they want from you, and then you probably won’t have to answer that question. Personally, I am not surprised. Facebook has a history of breaking what bloggers and small business invested time and money in building, and they sometimes delete accounts with no recourse. This is just another step down the same path.

“This is EPIC fail!

Why in the world should I have to pay FB to access my entire friends list, no matter what I want to share? I have a personal page, not a business. FB wants ME to pay THEM to advertise SOMEONE ELSE’S product? They want to treat my list of friends like a mailing list that I have to pay to use on behalf of ANOTHER COMPANY? Get REAL! THEY should be paying ME!!

Hey FB! Why don’t you go completely nuts and charge the company pages every time I share their page and then pay that money to ME!

Keep it up, FB. You are already starting to lose the people who provide your bread and butter and capitalism or not, you can’t milk a dead cow.” ~ Patti Crawford ~

I would do what Dangerous Minds did and try paying ONCE – or maybe a few times over a month or two – to reach all your current fans and encourage them to interact with you somewhere else. Ideally that somewhere would be a domain you control, but for bloggers it could be a blogging community.

“I’ve experimented with promoted posts and have received little to no benefit. A recent promoted post for a local event was liked by 44 people and seen by about 1300. Of those 44 likes 39 of them were people in foreign countries, who are very unlikely to have ever been to my store or to care about a small event happening in Portland, Oregon. The problem isn’t just that Facebook is blocking access to our fan base and making us pay to get it back, it’s that when I pay to promote a post I am unable to target my views so I am paying to promote them to a bunch of people who will not be able to attend the event (or who aren’t actual people).” ~ Chloe Eudaly, Feeding Frenzie, Indie Book Store, Portland, Oregon http://www.facebook.com/rfrenzy

For more details, before you decide be sure you READ and understand eConsultancy’s Case study: Do Facebook Promoted Posts Work? and MarketingMag: Goodbye Facebook.

Kimberly Castleberry just put out this long video that you will want to watch if you’re serious about Facebook. She points out that content shared on Facebook was never seen by 100% of your fans, but not specifically that many have seen dramatic reductions in reach and traffic.

See Kim’s post Facebook Fan Page Fear Factor aka What’s REALLY Going On With Page Visibility and Reach for a complete listing of what she covers and the time each point she makes appears on the video.

ALTERNATIVES TO PAYING FACEBOOK

What we should all learn from what is going on with Facebook is that we need to build our social lives on domains we control or trust to stay independent. We should use our own domains as a base, and collaborate with others to drive traffic FROM the major social networks and sites TO our own blogs, forums, and communities.

I am personally using BlogInteract for socializing and strengthening relationships with other bloggers. I explained my reasoning in Why BlogInteract is the Best Blogging Community. You can follow and friend GrowMap on BlogInteract or join my Viral Marketing group if you’re serious about getting major sites to send you traffic and willing to support others who will support you.

“Facebook is a free service, and we pay the price of privacy to use it. But to rig the social conversation and then ask people to buy their way back in? That’s a terrible user experience decision, and it will hurt Facebook in the long run. Power users will see the philosophical flaws here, and average users will be miffed that their wedding photos are invisible to old high school chums unless they pony up the cash.” ~ Mike Silverman ~

I would also like to point out that bloggers can support small businesses and each other by using CommentLuv, writing about and linking to them, or at least allowing links in their comments.

WHAT IS EDGERANK?

Some people are calling these new costs to have Facebook show your content sponsored posts, but much of what you need to know is about Edgerank. Edgerank is Facebook’s algorithm that decides what we see.

FACEBOOK PROMOTED POSTS:

Background on promoted posts and how they’re affecting Facebook users.

FACEBOOK PERSONAL PROMOTED POSTS

It is confusing that there are costs for promoting content on fan pages and also costs for promoting content shared by individual users on their personal Facebook pages. These posts are specifically about the costs involved in promoting your personal content – like wedding announcements or photos.

FACEBOOK SPONSORED STORIES:

Promoted posts, Edgerank, Sponsored Stories – keeping these various methods of charging and controlling what you see is confusing. These are specifically about Facebook’s Sponsored Stories and the lawsuits and settlements around them.

This is an unjust practice and a scheme that we must never fall for. Sadly, this platform has truly become a vicious platform for extortion and other schemes to make money out of their subscribers and more so online marketers. This is definitely alarming. Thanks for sharing!

Hi Emilia,

Yes, that is exactly what it is. You must work on building your own list and make sure you have a backup and keep whatever service you run it on happy so you don’t lose your connections and have to start over.

My greater concern is that those who pay for promoted posts are being scammed. See my post on Social Implications

I truly agree with you Dev that promoting business in this manner is like asking for a bribe and if they wanted only to charge they could have kept the charges open from before only.I have always followed Facebook and if in any case this is true then they will loose the trust of their followers.

Thanks for laying out the facebook change. It seems that the promotional posts are most affecting smaller businesses who relied on a more egalitarian facebook for exposure without encouraging interaction with their subscribers. Of course, any small change to facebook always sends a wave of uproar through disgruntled users because they enjoy the “status” quo. I’m certain the creative businesses will rise above. If nothing else, personal accounts can expect a drop in facebook spam.

I have missed family events and major updates because of the new timeline and this new edgerank system, on top of people missing my own posts! I never put much faith into facebook in the first place, with their security issues and consistent “We know best” attitude. No one asks for these features, clearly they are not catering towards their users. Now people can just buy their way onto my feed, makes me ill.

Facebook is starting to go the way of Google– they’ve become far too powerful and everyone is basically at the mercy of these companies if they want to have any kind of success promoting their businesses or products online. I liken this to the Google sandbox– Google will lower your website in the search results purposely to force you to pay for their Adwords advertising.

Facebook is trying to capitalize on their massive user base and influence now. They reached a point where they have real power and authority with online advertising, and they are starting to use that authority by limiting what we can do with their service without paying for it. On the one hand you have to be frustrated by something like that, and on the other, you can see how we got to this point, and Facebook is trying to turn an even bigger profit, as they need to now that they have shareholders and all that. Unfortunate, but inevitable I think.

Reply

sarah pick November 7, 2012 at 6:46 am

I guess this was inevitable really as like many other global organisations they feel that they have the power to implement anything and the public will just accept it. I suppose with Facebook being a business it feels it needs to increase its profits, but it was people like you and me that enabled them to become so big in the first place. Social media has taken over the world and brought people together from all over the world but there are new systems that people might turn to in the future if they have to pay to stay in touch. Not a good idea Facebook – remember where you started out!

Great read! Ever since FB went public their shares have been dropping consistently and though the idea of sponsored posts has been floating around long before this point, sponsored posts was a way show share holders some potential revenue streams that will justify the investment and have a decent ROI for their shares. In theory this idea has good revenue generating potential, however, they have failed to take the user experience into account. Sure, sponsored posts can generate revenues of “x” amount but why will people pay “x” amount for these posts. FB just wrongly assumed that people will be down with this. They have betrayed their users in order to satisfy their share holders, which can sometimes happen in business after a company goes public, even though it shouldn’t.

Hello Pavel,

You have to be willing to look behind the curtain and not just believe what a company says their goals are. Facebook is an information gathering site building massive profiles on everyone for whatever purpose anyone with power may choose. We must clearly see the big picture.

If they can make money, too, that suits them – but they don’t really want small businesses to make money nor do they want individuals to have the freedom to be self-sufficient. The pricing ensures that can’t happen. It favors big brands who don’t care and this is the same model Google followed: lure the small businesses in, make it easy for them to reach people inexpensively, and then gradually take it away once they’re hooked on the what is easiest. Many have never recovered from what Google has done to them, and now they’re burnt again.

Businesses need to get serious. The longer you spend chasing after traffic from Google and Facebook the less time you have to build what they can’t take away from you. Use their systems to grow your mailing lists – and make sure you back them up regularly. Focus on growing relationships with people locally so that no matter what happens your business will still be viable.

The highest converting method is referrals. See my post on How to Get Recommended for how to do that.

Almost everything comes with a price nowadays but what they don’t realize is the fact that they’re killing what we ultimately love about the platform in the first place. This is ridiculous and they would be hard-pressed to make us all agree on this money-making ploy. Thanks for sharing!

Hello Aayna,

That is the worst thing about all the games being played online – the average user never will notice. How can they know what isn’t there? There is no question that this is true – Facebook has publicly admitted it and the person who shares content can see the reach in graphs right in their own Facebook account.

There are many links in this post to people sharing what their current reach is and comments, too.

I’m not sure if this was the right move by Facebook. If I accidentally ‘like’ a page, and see too many posts that I’m not necessarily interested in, I can just unsubscribe from their updates. Why would Facebook intentionally do this ‘for you?’

I have witnessed this first hand, have seen a “MAJOR” drop in who sees my posts. I have since started lowering the amount of posts on Facebook, because I DO NOT agree with what they are doing and I will not be sucked into another “Monopoly” I have since started using other forms of marketing for our Bio Toner business.

I will not be controlled by some company, facebook or Google for that matter. If it means going back to the old school form of marketing (Mailings, Phone calls, Etc Etc) I will. Because as you stated Gail, they are way beyond just making money, they have way to MUCH control of our lifes as it is and I will not fall into there trap.

Hello Ted,

You and I see things much the same. We need to do what is right and not let corruption and power dictate what we do. By supporting each other and putting together a system of independent sites for those of us who do not choose to be controlled to use we can build separate economies.

Fortunately for us I can tell you that what works best of all is getting personal recommendations. Now that I can drive half a million impressions on Twitter I can tell you that personal referrals convert better than all those impressions put together.

Gail,

I couldn’t agree with you more, I have always recieved more sales from personal referrals over any other type of marketing. Other than me personally stopping at businesses with my big smile on a sales call :)

I have started working on our Twitter account, growing it slowly though because i want the right people seeing our tweets and possibly retweeting them for us.

As always, thank you for the GREAT work you do on here and I look forward to many more great posts by you.

I must say it was flawless and great to read. Facebook is taking advantages of it’s popularity I think. Starting a social media platform for free and then asking for money to promote someones business is like taking bribe for your work. If you need money for promoting business why didn’t they mention it from the beginning.
If they take money for promoting an individual ID’s please let me know then, I am very much interested, lol.
