Why eCommerce Sales Decline and Fluctuate – And What to Do to Increase Your Conversions and Profits

Yahoo! Stores for Dummies Book and other books by Rob Snell

This post was inspired by Rob Snell’s Yahoo! Stores SEO Rant. All ecommerce store owners need to read it.

Rob is one sharp ecommerce guy and THE Yahoo! Stores expert who wrote the book on Yahoo! Stores – literally – the Yahoo! Stores for Dummies Book.

If you have a Yahoo store you need to know Rob. Even if you don’t, you still need to know Rob. Here’s why: Yahoo Stores Expert Rob Snell Generates $10,354,767 Sales Increase.

If you sell anything this is one post you don’t want to take lightly.

There are two major reasons that sales are down or erratic:
Google and the economy.

When Google first introduced conversion tracking to AdWords I was managing dozens of accounts for Small Business owners – primarily Yahoo! and Volusion ecommerce stores.

I warned my clients that giving Google that data would tell them what searches converted for them and allow them to increase costs per click on those keyword phrases and lower their rankings in the search engines to increase their profits.

Google KNOWS which of your keyword phrases convert!
And they’re taking that converting traffic away from
small business and handing it to their big brand buddies.

Later, Google bought Urchin analytics, rebranded it as Google Analytics, and offered it for free. I repeated my warnings – but none heeded them – and even if they had the odds are that most phrases that convert well for you will for your competitors who probably gave Google that data.

For 5.5 years I managed AdWords accounts, charging $100/hr in advance by PayPal and had all the customers I could handle.  But there was a big problem.

Why eCommerce Sales Declined

When Google added graphs to AdWords accounts I was able to confirm my suspicions that they were manipulating the quality of the traffic they sent. You can easily see this if you look at individual days for keyword phrases with a consistent conversion rate.

When traffic is up and conversions drop to zero,
Google is selling you worthless traffic.

Getting zero sales on increased ad spend
is a one-way ticket to bankruptcy.

What they were doing was obvious to me – especially when Google took over $300 in one day from a luggage store with a $500 a month ad spend budget. We usually spent about $15 a month on that high dollar keyword phrase and made two nice sales for a really high conversion rate.

That day we spent almost their entire budget for the month –
in one day! – and made zero sales
even though we had many times more traffic.

Google had shown our very expensive exact match brand phrase for the generic word ‘luggage’ – and the results page for a search for the word luggage that day showed ads for several very expensive brands that no advertiser would target to the word luggage.

Someone searching for ‘luggage’ is highly unlikely
to be looking for a $1000+ aluminum case.

That is what ppc experts call distribution fraud: displaying your ads where they don’t belong. I had tiny accounts running on auto-pilot that I did not check in regularly – and Google’s ever expanding broad match and distribution fraud were getting consistently more dangerous.

As a one-person ppc specialist, I could not protect my clients.

The only way that MIGHT be possible is to write a custom program to immediately pause spending on any keywords that suddenly have no conversions.  If anyone ever did that it would probably be Marty Weintraub at Aimclear SEM services.

I sent the proof I had to Bob Cringely who was writing for PBS then.  That week he published The Next Microsoft: Google is learning too well from the master about what Google was doing.

When my friendly neighborhood psychopath decided to get violent and I had to leave suddenly without taking anything with me, I decided it was a good time to stop managing ppc ads anyway.

The handwriting was on the wall – Google’s monopoly was
DANGEROUS

And someone (me) needed to find other ways
to drive traffic to small businesses.

Since launching this new blog August 19, 2008, I wrote some posts to warn small businesses of the dangers:

I want to call special attention to that last link because it contains screen captures showing that Panda (originally called Farmer by SEOs) was NOT about content quality:

Google slapped their competitors – especially shopping
comparison sites like TheFind and ShopWiki –
who compete with Google Product Search.

Sistrix data showed TheFind shopping comparison site lost 86% of their traffic. While they probably got some of that traffic back – these updates allow Google to test the effects, roll it back, and then slap you when you most need those rankings!

Look at the screen captures in that post and you’ll see that those types of sites show us thousands of small businesses – but Google only offers FIVE big brand stores with an additional fifteen if you click more.

Google reduced consumer choice overnight from thousands of small businesses
to Twenty of their big brand buddies – which is precisely what their
CEO announced was their plan in the now infamous comment:
The Internet is fast becoming a “cesspool
where false information thrives,

Brands are how you sort out the cesspool.

But Google did not stop at taking away your organic traffic. I ask you to focus again on the screen captures in that post about the Panda update and pay special attention to the red text in that post.

Those screen captures show that Google is HIDING products that ARE in the ecommerce store’s feed when you search for the money phrases, but showing them for generic phrases that don’t convert.

That proves they ARE in Google Product Search and this is
intentional
diversion of converting traffic
from small businesses to big brands.

Some ecommerce stores aren’t seeing this yet because Google has not gotten around to their converting long tail phrases yet – but believe me they will in time get around to almost everyone.

If what you sell is available at eBay or Amazon or big brand stores your best converting traffic WILL be diverted eventually – and most likely already is but not ALL the time.

Google is clever that way. Just as they only sell junk traffic to AdWords customers for a day or two – knowing that most ppc “experts” will never check on daily results – they can easily hide whether you are appearing on page one or in what specific position through personalized results and constant churn.

Even more sneaky – you may rank for your target phrases
all year – until the prime time for you to sell that item.

Then your competition on page one – when you are probably pretty busy with sales (hopefully) and don’t notice (not good) is no longer other small businesses like yours – it is Amazon, eBay, Wal-mart, Target, Best Buy, etc.

So during the prime shopping periods – and especially between Thanksgiving and Christmas – those first page listings you usually have are driving traffic to big brands instead of small businesses.

Think that can’t happen to you? See Why You
Can NOT Rely Solely on Organic Listings for Traffic and Revenue

for more details and to read on ProBlogger about how they lost
traffic during the holiday sales season three years in a row.

I am NOT saying you should not optimize your site, implement good SEO processes or stop building quality links. Take as much traffic from Google as you can get – but immediately start getting traffic from every other source possible:

  1. Start by getting your free local search directory listings through Universal Business Listings (UBL) – even if you are an online only ecommerce store – because incoming links from major sites like Yahoo!, Google, Bing, and hundreds of others will boost your listings in the serps. See our Local Search Case Study that shows a client who was getting 96% of their traffic from Google received 75 visitors from hundreds of other sources for every 100 visitors from Google.
  2. Read what Rob Snell recommends as additional traffic sources and ACT on it.
  3. Do blog outreach – and the easy way to do that is to get involved in our Small Business Blogging Contest designed to get bloggers really looking at what our contest sponsors have to offer.

growmap-contest-468x60ECONOMIC EFFECT ON ONLINE SALES

Because I work with dozens of bloggers and affiliate marketers around the world, I have unique insights into the state of the economy. Here are some key points you will want to understand:

  • About three years ago a power affiliate from Australia started working with me because he saw his sales decline 30% across ALL niches. His sites target a primarily American audience.
  • Many ecommerce store owners I know saw their traffic decline by about one-third due to the Google MayDay update and the Panda update took them down below half their normal traffic. While they sometimes see better traffic levels off and on, none have anywhere near recovered to traffic levels they once saw – and the percentage of sales lost parallels the amount of traffic decline.
  • An exceptional SEO I know was earning – if I recall accurately – about $600,000 a year from his many sites 5-6 years ago. I recently spoke with him and asked how much sales had dropped. He said those same sites today only earn about 10% of what they did back then.

WHAT YOU CAN DO:

Conversion Conference

  1. Find other sources of traffic.
  2. Focus on increasing your conversion rates.
  3. Use independent search engines, analytics, and online solutions provided by small companies.
  4. Share with everyone you know the importance of using alternatives to Google. If more people used different search engines to find what they need, Google’s monopoly would decrease and they would not be so dangerous. Read about why Google really IS evil.
  5. Encourage your friends, family, co-workers and customers to support small businesses because they are the key to economic stability. See the infographic based on research done by Local First in my post on why CommentLuv and buying local keeps money circulating to create more jobs that pay a living wage, support critical services like schools and fire departments, and raise the local standard of living.

Money we spend with online and local small businesses is immediately recirculated in the economy – unlike money we spend with big brands and big box stores that benefits the wealthy and does NOT recirculate.

According to a study commissioned by Local First:

$73 of every $100 dollars we spend in locally
owned businesses STAYS in our communities!

Only $43 of every $100 dollars spent in
non-locally owned businesses STAYS.

That extra $30 means more local sales tax revenues and more jobs and higher pay and benefits for people in your community. Small businesses also pay more in property taxes that support schools and fire departments.

Imagine how much more than $30 that would be if your local small businesses start sourcing more of what they sell locally.  Most currently buy from major suppliers and NOT from other local businesses – but they COULD and they WILL if you encourage and support them!

I know this is a very long post and covers some complicated subjects. DO NOT let that keep you from doing what you MUST do. I can recommend someone who can assist you or how you can learn needed skills yourself.

I’ve been noticing for a while now that the typical small business site, with the escalating CPCs, is less and less likely to profit from AdWords.

Absolutely right. Google playing its Panda games while economy remains dismal, sales are down like never before. When you look at the economic forecast, it looks even worse. This has been the worst economic tsunami ever.

I think “G” is afraid that they might lose sales and I think they might have decreased sales already. When Facebook came, they see it as a threat since Facebook and other social media sites gained more traffic and even have ads. That’s what I think and my a few of my friends as well. Just to be safe, SEO must be paired with SMM.

Thanks for sharing your thoughts and observations. Very useful indeed.

I have not read a blog post and engaged so intently for a while. I agree completely and I have been having similar thoughts for about a year. It is becoming quite clear to me that search has become ALL about selling advertising and that process is hurting the small businesses the most.

Make sure your messages are targeted. When you target your advertising, you increase the relevancy of your business while improving the consumer’s shopping experience. Cater these messages to various segments of the population. If someone has shopped with you before, you want to show them items similar to those they have already purchased. For others, you may want to offer them products based on where they live.
Bring attention to certain items and explain why they are the best available. Popular brands are a great place to start. This is as simple as adding tags to certain products. These tags may point out best sellers, top rated items or seasonal ones.
Test new ideas to see how they are working. Make sure to optimize those campaigns which are providing the best results. This allows you to make the most of your advertising dollars and it is easy to do.

Thanks to the tablet, these e-commerce have nowhere to go but up. Did you know that the average purchase made on a tablet in 2011 was $123? For this reason, you have to take advantage of the market to increase sales and bring new customers in. Many brands seem to miss out on this though. There are some simple steps that can help you to expand your business that you may not be using. Here are some tips that will help you to take your company to the next level and beyond.

Wow! Great post Gail, really great. To me what’s incredible is not really that Google manipulates results, pageranks and whatever else it wants, it’s that people don’t recognize, or as you say don’t want to see. Until it’s their turn to be bashed. No one with a grain of salt would believe that Big G would put a small website above a big one with a large wallet and an Adwords account, it’s just another excuse to slash websites at their will; “It’s overoptimized!” Simply ridicolous. Everything G does is for money and for business but still there are some who still believe it provides a service. Well, I’m going to close soon all G services, plus all social things except Twitter and StumbleUpon.

Dogs don’t eat dogs and Corporations don’t eat Corporations but arrange to eat the others. Just like politicians who debate just because it’s a stage show but in reality are only interested in keeping their power and benefits.

The problem is living online without Google because what are the alternatives? Bing which belongs to Microsoft? FaceBook which is probably the only data miner stronger and ruthless than Google? The horizon is pretty dark; seems we’re entering the world of CyberPunk for real.

As regards your other point on freedom you’re right again and it’s pretty clear you’re living in a Police State. People living in fear of something are always eager to trade their freedom and rights to feel secure, until the axe hits them. Like what happened in Germany last century as you correctly mentioned. And governments to maintain power have always used fear because they know how well it works.

Also in many places around the world Police is not anymore really concerned in protecting the good guys from the bad ones but in protecting those with power and money from the hungry, and angry, population. Seems like living at Nottingham with the Sceriff. And I’m really hit by those who enforce security at USA Airports, it’s crazy what they can do to people without having to answer to anyone, crazy and scaring. Is this the world we’re going to have?

Makes Stalin seems like a child. Or Mao. Only that these times they are much better at using PR and cover tactics. I’ve just seen a movie on renditions, another thing hard to believe happening from a country so concerned in theory with human rights.

Well, that’s enough. Let’s enjoy the weekend! :)

But just let me add, in case you don’t know, that due to recent changes in politic and economy Greece and Iceland are no more part of Europe. They’ve disappeared completely from news and Tv. :(

Hi John,

All major sites including Google, Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, etc. are best used to find people interested in what you’re doing to attract back to a domain YOU control. When you do, make sure you have an offer to encourage visitors to get on your mailing list.

Businesses and bloggers need to set up their mailing list BEFORE they get active in social media. See my guest post on Adotas: Email + Social Media: The Horse Goes in Front

Never count on those sites because they can and do delete accounts at will AND they censor what we share and manipulate social proof.

Just search for Google account deleted, AdSense account suspended, Facebook account deleted and if you look far enough into the search results (at least right now) you will see many complaints.

Imagine having all your personal and business contacts in Gmail and all your business records in Google Docs and having invested in building your networks online – and have it all disappear in a moment. Most assume that can never happen to them. I encourage them to read Google user’s account deleted: 7 years of digital life gone.

Some might call it “paranoid” to think that Google can/would actually do that, but hey, it makes sense, on some level. They have the data, they can easily adjust prices on those keywords that converts well for you, to earn them more money. I never thought about it that way though, but it’s worth thinking about, if you don’t want to put all your eggs in one basket.

The way those in power keep people from rising up and demanding they stop doing us wrong is by convincing them anyone who points out their evil ways is insane, or a “conspiracy theorist” or delusional.

When I write what I write I provide proof in screen captures and share with others how to confirm what I say is true. Unfortunately, most people have allowed themselves to be so conditioned that they are able to dismiss the most compelling proof and rationalize away what they don’t want to hear.

Most people prefer to pretend everything is all right and ignore what scares them. That is why they are suckers for con artists selling get rich quick schemes and ignore sound advice from people like me – they don’t want to hear how much work it takes or that you need to be exceptional to succeed. They want to believe The American Dream that you, too, can be wealthy and living the life of luxury with a blond babe on each arm, leaning on a luxury automobile parked in front of your very own McMansion.

That is why people did not flee what was happening in Nazi Germany and why even those who have tasted the fruits of the current American police state still deny that what is already happening here is insane and we are treading that same path. I have personally been slammed on the ground and handcuffed and threatened with arrest or “mental evaluation” for WALKING.

When I was young, WALKING was NOT something that would get an unarmed white, educated woman over 50 born and raised in the U.S. harassed by police.

I would have written that off as one out of control small town police agency if I hadn’t asked around and immediately found two other people who had experienced the same treatment in two different cities in two different counties. We’re not talking about some third world country here – we’re talking about small towns in north Texas!

Law enforcement is convinced we are all dangerous and being trained to do to us here precisely what the Nazi S.S. did in Germany, Poland and elsewhere. I wrote more about what is happening across America in my comment on why I believe we are living in a Police State situation.

Urgh. Google keeps on changing its algorithm. You can’t have a definite idea as to what Google wants and what you must do about it. I guess, you must try everything you can do to “know” what Google wants you to do.

Hello,

What most don’t realize is Google is doing the same thing law enforcement and the IRS have always done: make an example out of a few to scare the hell out of the many and keep them in line.

Those who think if they just drive perfect or are good little boys and girls online that they will never get into trouble are naive, indeed. Black hat SEO is rampant because it works. If they aren’t getting slapped and the ethical businesses are it should be obvious that this is all a game and the house holds all the aces.

Get over the idea that you only lose traffic from Google if you break their rules. Their rules only apply to the little guy and not their big brand buddies. As George Carlin says, it’s a club – and you aren’t IN IT.

Hi Jim,

Be sure to read what I publish on this blog and save the URL somewhere offline because when Google starts de-indexing and burying sites using their two new pat excuses of Google Chrome data (“our users didn’t want to see your site”) and Page Load Times I have no doubt people like me are high on their list to make disappear (in more ways than one).

Even though I have over the years offered to personally show other ppc experts how to see what Google is doing, most do not want to know and those who do are rarely willing to risk making the 900# Google gorilla mad at them because they believe they can’t afford the income they might lose if Google stops sending them traffic.

They also must take their clients into consideration and not do anything that would cause Google to put them out of business. That is why I no longer have clients = so that the only person Google can come after is me.

While it is possible Google could hurt anyone I link to my position is that Google is coming for ALL OF YOU eventually so better to know how to change the game NOW than wait until it is your turn later.

We handed Google the power to decide what businesses survive and which die and only we – collectively – can take that power away from them. We do that by using alternative sources of traffic and getting everyone we know to stop automatically using Google for everything.

As some wise person once said, “There is no free lunch” – in other words, when you get something for free there is ALWAYS a price to be paid – one way or another.

Most automatically believe the media spin that the American economy is recovering when common sense and basic observation are enough to prove that nothing could be further from the truth!

That is why there are occupy protests and why they will not stop. The young people saddled with five figure college debt and no job prospects and the older people laid off from careers that had real pensions, real benefits, and paid what you could actually live on have no obvious path to keeping a roof over their head and food on their tables – and thanks to a useless education system they don’t have any idea how to start a business or work for themselves.

Many WILL figure out how to be in business for themselves – because that IS the best solution – and if we support those small businesses they will create the jobs those who can’t start a business need.

What I do is encourage people to find mentors who have the skills they need and speed up the learning curve. We can’t afford to take years figuring this out because we may not have years before the value of the dollar declines so much that we have the worst depression ever seen.

We already have massive numbers of underemployed, unemployed and the new homeless families who hide their status even from their closest friends and families because they are embarrassed and never pictured this every happening to them.

The homeless you see are those who have always been visible – the alcoholics, mentally challenged and those who choose the freedom of the streets over the slavery of working for someone else. THEY are NOT the homeless I am warning about that few see. The magnitude of what is going on is HUGE but largely unseen.

The new homeless are living in tents or their cars and showering at their health club or a friend’s or a truck stop – or living in an RV they move from camping spot to camping spot – or crashing on the couches of friends and family.

Bloggers who support small businesses ARE the solution. They can show the way, mentor others, create LOCAL communities that will help each other even when no one has money to buy necessities. That is why we are collectively doing the Small Business Blogging contest – to get small businesses and bloggers working together to create economies that work.

Excellent post. I think one of the reasons people stop clicking back through to websites they have subscribed to is because of canned content. Aweber can be used to a detriment. Sending too many emails or constantly cold selling people can become annoying. Passive selling is the way. If what you have is so good people will be beating the door down for it. Ask Apple ask Android.

Hi Jacko,

The only thing that really works is continual recommendations by those you know and trust until you finally act. There is no magic number of blog posts, tweets, retweets, stumbles or pins that = more sales. The more complicated what you offer is, the more true this will be for your business.
