Business Friendly Akismet Free DoFollow Blog List

July 13, 2010 · 154 comments

UPDATE: the new GASP Anti-Spam WordPress plugin has been released and is available in the WordPress Plugin Repository.

THIS is the ALTERNATIVE TO AKISMET that provides the SOLUTION to being Flagged as a Spammer! Spread it throughout the blogosphere and your comments will work again.

How to Block Spam Without Akismet

Possible Way to Block Spam Without Using Akismet

Because of the challenges of commenting in blogs that have Akismet installed we no longer use Akismet in our blogs and we have been asked to compile a list of blogs that are Akismet free.

If your blog does not use Akismet, you welcome new comments, and you would like to be listed, please leave a comment with all of the informati0n listed below and we will periodically move your links up into the body of this post:

  1. Blog platform (WordPress, Blogger, Typepad, etc.)
  2. URL (Address where your site is, i.e., http://www.yourdomain.com/)
  3. Desired Anchor Text
  4. Dofollow or Nofollow?
  5. CommentLuv installed?
  6. KeywordLuv installed?
  7. Keyword/Business Friendly

Option number seven requires some explanation. Some bloggers install KeywordLuv but do not welcome commentators who have businesses or use business related keywords.

If you do not want to receive comments by business owners or their representatives please do not request to be listed here.

In our blogs we have disabled Aksimet and made sure that the option to only allow comments to be immediately visible after one approved comment from that commentator. That has effectively kept objectionable comments from going live. It does not take any more time to review the comments in pending that we had been reviewing in spam.

If you are not using Akismet we would also love to hear from you about how you are dealing with spam. We have considered using captchas but know that there are captcha inaccessibility issues for the visually impaired have difficulty with them.

There is a very good post that explains Why Attacking Spam Methods is Useless.

A growing number of blogs and businesses will realize that blocking real people from commenting is a very bad idea. If that is you we would love to hear from you.

I think he totally misses the point. Dofollow blogs get lots of link love coming in to them from all the lists of dofollow blogs. I would be glad to find my dofollow blog on all the lists, not sad.

I’m glad to have found this post. Yeah, Akismet is becoming a pain now. I’m trying to comment on blog’s that I frequently do and it’s not showing up my comments and marking them as spam. I have no idea why this was happening so I just sent them a message through their contact form. Problem is, most blogs on the internet still follow Akismet so you can’t really say a big no to it. =[

It doesn’t necessarily mean that as owner you have to read the posts of your site. Because sometimes, comments are not for owners, but the visitors and subscriber.

Well reading comments and than approving it takes a lot of time. I have a blog where people leave hundreds of comments daily…I don’t have enough time to read all of them.

I have recently become extremely disillusioned with Akismet, and I’m delighted to have discovered this site. I have long encouraged real, business-friendly comments with KeywordLuv and CommentLuv in the blog section of my professional site. Now I’ve also disabled Akismet and I feel a lot better. Please add to your list:

Blog platform – Wordpress
URL – http://stevediamondconsulting.com/
Desired Anchor Text – Executive Computer Consultant
Dofollow or Nofollow? – Dofollow
CommentLuv installed? – Yes
KeywordLuv installed? – Yes
Keyword/Business Friendly? – Yes

Thanks very much!

Spam will always be a problem. But i also think that Akismet is not the best solution. If you have a blog you have to put the efforts in it to read the comments.

In commenting a doFollow blog, why is it that some comments approved were treated as a noFollow? How do blogs classify comments as doFollow or noFollow?
I find hard time researching doFollow blogs to comment just to find out that my comment will be treated s a noFollow. It’s a waste of time in the linkbuilding process.

Hi Armil,

The most likely reason is that they are using one of the plugins that allows them to nofollow the first x comments and then after you have a set number approved then all your comments change to dofollow.

There are several plugins like that and most allow them to choose how many comments (usually between 3 and 10). I don’t like them because they do little to discourage spammers who know how they work and only confuse other commentators.

You can often find a post or comment p0licy that says how many comments before yours go dofollow. Search for Lucia’s Linky Love or Luv. I don’t remember the names of the others right now.

The latest version of CommentLuv is going to make it easier for bloggers to nofollow comments so you may be seeing more nofollow dofollow issues in the future.

Remember that there is really no such thing as nofollow. Search and you’ll see that the comments are indexed so they must have been followed, right? So those comments are not a waste of a time – they just aren’t as valuable for improving search position.

I keep the current info about CommentLuv on the post I’ll put in this reply.

Thank you vgv8,

We were not aware of that. Here is a machine translation of the page shared:

On the Blogs of the Pat_innen became – as reports here – the comment function system internally switched off – which naturally also a possibility of the avoidance of Spam actual however none, which appears very up-to-date to me in the Web2.0-Zeitalter. To it a reference was past Thursday now parallel on the fact on the German-language Word press Blog that the use of Akismet was legally doubtful in Germany.

Kind of tie-clip: BieneDa I read itself also by the various comments, decided I, instead of trying out an adjustment for the comment function and further testing/recommendation of Akismet times the there quite frequently mentioned anti-Spam Bee: German-language one (!) Alternative one to Akismet: http://antispambee.de/. After the installation I looked at myself and decided the attitudes to want caution for the sake of only times no direct deletion. From me inexplicable reasons this information was not correctly stored unfortunately. : (

Now I – the attitudes again stored – have obviously more successfully. This mark also with a notification, if new (SPAM) comments are received. Still there I announced myself afterwards off and again and the attitudes was. :) . I get now no notifications, but nevertheless the reference on that the Dashboard, like many Spam Mails was still deleted and/or. itself in the Spam file befinden*. Now it remains hoping that in the past week no “more genuinly” (seriously more meant) comment was gepiekst by the Bienchen and found for “false”.

Kind of tie-clip: Magnifying glass which is your/your experiences/opinions about Spam and its avoidance? Might be auto-translation of
http://blog.wordpress-deutschland.org/2011/03/01/verwendung-von-akismet-in-deutschland-rechtlich-fragwuerdig-konsequenzen.html
is more fortunate in English:
Title:Verwendung von Akismet in Deutschland rechtlich
fragwürdig – Konsequenzen?
Article:
Akismet is included by default in WordPress, and even in our U.S. edition, as a plugin to fight spam. It does this quite successfully through activation , but it looks like the use of Akismet in Germany (and possibly other European countries) is legally very difficult – especially if you have no privacy statement, in which one clearly states the term of use and effects of Akismet use.

Akismet collects a lot of data (IP, Comment Name, email address comment, comment, browser and many more) and sends it to servers in the US. Tools like Google Analytics do the same and are therefore under strong fire from privacy advocates because it infringes the privacy laws.

Legally probably not clear, but as we spread the word in the German press, we also bear responsibility. And it raises the question of how WordPress Germany would respond. Would it explain the Terms of Service in less ambiguous terms before someone enables Akismet? Would we exclude the Akismet from usage, and if so, then what will be the possible replacement as alternative?
We want your feedback!

We have far less spam since we deleted Akismet than we ever had using it. We have almost no spam now because we use an anti-spam plugin that is far superior to Akismet.

Akismet, and other blacklisting systems, are easily exploited by criminals and spam bots (one can blacklist competitor for ever), promote spam (by interacting with spam feeds/bots instead of simply blocking them)
http://stackoverflow.com/questions/1762189/blacklist-ip-database/4790734#4790734

Then they are retroactive and so are doomed to always lag behind advancements in bot and spamming techniques

Im having trouble with akismet at the moment, I noticed my comments were not showing then realised my email had been blocked, I contacted akismet who said it was for using keywords in the name field. I replied by saying I had only used keywords in the mane field when the blog had enabled keywordluv, so I was only doing as instruted. When I get a reply i will check back here and let you guys know what they said.

Hi James,

I will be very interested in hearing what they tell you as I have not come across them saying that to anyone else before, but it makes sense in a way. Have you seen our new Akismet replacement? There are thousands of blogs using it instead of Akismet now and the faster we spread it the sooner it won’t matter if Akismet blacklists you.

I am interested in this Akismet replacement could you give me a link for more info please.

Here is there first reply
Hi James,

Most people regard your comments as spam. Stuffing the name field with keywords annoys people.

Hi James,

Thank you for taking the time to come back and tell us what they said. The official WordPress, Akismet and Google policy is they do not like links in comments and they should all be nofollow with no keywords in them.

Google favors big brands and they do not want small businesses and bloggers to be able to build links by commenting.

There is a tab at the top of this blog for our GrowMap anti-spambot plugin or you can use that link to get the details. You can also find it by searching for GrowMap in the official WordPress repository.
